Warriors softball team drops three games on road trip |
The road was not so kind to the Del Norte High varsity softball team. On Friday, the Warriors were soundly defeated by Windsor 13-4. On Saturday, they faced Windsor again and lost 12-3. Following the game they went down the road to face Ukiah and were blanked 11-0 to drop to 3-3 for the season. Del Norte was without four players, which certainly did not help matters, head coach Jackie Heuberger said. Two were taking part in the Del Norte County Junior Miss Program, one was taking the ACT, and another could not attend due to personal reasons. “It was a hard trip,” Heuberger said. “We got beat pretty bad.” The squad was not mentally prepared and made way too many errors in the field and on the mound, she said. The Warriors did a good job hitting against Windsor, getting 8 hits the first contest and 7 hits in the second game, but they struggled getting runners in for scores. Against Ukiah, nothing went right as the Warriors could not score a single run. Heuberger said that the team must now regroup, not be down on themselves and play to their potential. Senior Sarah Weiser said that the losses were “very frustrating,” and the team must bounce back and play well with the conference season beginning this week. “We need to play like we did against Gold Beach,” she said. Earlier this season, the Warriors defeated Gold Beach twice. Heuberger commended Amber Babbitt for doing a good job in her first start of the year at catcher. Hailey Bergquist also did well, going 3-for-7 from the plate in the two games against Windsor. On Wednesday, Del Norte opens the Big 5 Conference season at home against McKinleyville. The contest begins at 4 p.m. |
