It was a tale of two games on Saturday, as the Del Norte softball team opened its season at home with a doubleheader against Arcata.

The Tigers came to Del Norte and took it to the Warriors with a 12-1 victory in five innings in game one. In the second game, Del Norte answered back, shutting out the visitors for a 5-0 win.

Arcata jumped out to a commanding lead in the first game. The Tigers took advantage of two Del Norte errors in the top of the first to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the second and six more in the third. They held on for two more innings before the 10-run rule took effect after the fifth inning.

“They just didn’t play like they practice,” said Del Norte head coach Tom Moore. “They were a little tired, I thought they had a little first game jitters. It just wasn’t a very good game at all on offense or defense.”

Del Norte shortstop Ericka Alcala provided the only run for the Warriors in the first game.

In the second game, the Del Norte offense took a little while to heat up, but the improvement defensively was immediate.

“In the second game, they turned that around and they played as a whole,” Moore said. “That is the team that I know we have. They had a job to do, and I think after that beating in the first game, they understood what they had to do mentally and physically to produce a victory. They came together and played as a team.”

Del Norte took its first lead of the season in the fourth inning of game two. Right fielder Ali Olson hit a two out single, stole second base, and came around to the plate on Kaylen Gomes’ RBI single.

The next inning, the Warriors exploded for four more runs with Regin Loftin, Grace Bruschi, Delana Saylor and Kirsten Williams all coming around to score.

Warriors ace pitcher
Colleen Markussen had a strong outing, especially in the second game.

“The farther she goes, the better she gets,” Moore said. “I need her here an hour and a half before game time and just have her throw. She just gets better and better the more she throws.”

Del Norte has over a week off before they get back on the diamond. The Warriors will travel north for a game against Brookings on March 17.
