Warriors surge to 43-38 win at Mack

The Del Norte wrestling team grabbed a pair of dual victories on Wednesday night in McKinleyville.

The Warriors started the night with a 60-24 victory over Hoopa and ended with a tough 42-37 win over host McKinleyville for a clean sweep.

Del Norte used the match against Hoopa largely as a warm-up. Hoopa brought only four wrestlers, so Del Norte was guaranteed the team victory before the first match was even wrestled. The Warriors used the opportunity to get some junior varsity wrestlers some mat time.

“There was no danger of losing there, so we just used it to get some experience,” said Del Norte assistant coach Clinton Schaad. “McKinleyville was our main focus tonight. The kids rallied together. We told the kids we needed to get all the extra points we could, and I thought we wrestled well as a team.”

McKinleyville got off to a hot start in the dual, winning seven of the first 10 matches of the dual en route to a 37-18 lead with just four matches remaining. The Warriors never lost hope however.

“We knew we had a good strong push with our middle weights and upper weights and we won our last four matches by fall to get the win,” Schaad said.

Del Norte won each of the final four matches by fall, capped by Eric Turner’s pin at 195 pounds with the Warriors trailing by one to lift them to the victory.

“He has been one of our captains this year, so it was nice to have him go out there and get to do that for the team,” Schaad said.

The dual finished with a 7-7 tie out of the 14 weight classes. Schaad thought it was a great team effort to be able to come away with the win.

“Everybody wrestled well,” Schaad said. “Even if they didn’t win, they wrestled well and made sure that they didn’t give up any extra points.”
