CRESCENT CITY — The Del Norte High varsity volleyball team made quick work of fellow Big 5 Conference member Arcata Thursday night, soundly downing the Tigers 25-16, 25-12 and 25-11 at home.

The game started shortly before 7 p.m. and ended right around 8 p.m. The victory improves the Warriors to 14-8 overall and 3-0 in the Big 5 Conference.

"We kind of had a fun game and worked on things we wanted to try ," Del Norte head coach Meagan Curtis said. This included mixing up the sets and trying different hitting situations, which Curtis said was helpful to try in a game situation.

In the first match, Del Norte seemed to firmly be in control and overpowered the Tigers with their play. With Arcata down only 8-6, the Warriors made sure the Tigers did not make any sort of run and got the lead up to 15-9.

With the score at 18-14, Del Norte exploded for five straight points to have the 23-15 advantage and cruised to the 25-16 game 1 win.

In game 2 it was more of the same, as Del Norte continued to do a good job setting up hits, passing to each other and making a number of nice kills for points.

But, at the start of game 2, Aracta was able to tie it at 5 each. It was as close as they got to the Warriors all night. With the score 9-7, Del Norte scored eight straight points to take a 17-7 lead.

The Tigers only scored once more in game 2 as the Warriors took the game 25-12

In game 3, it was much of the same, as Del Norte was able to completely dominate their opponent. Arcata got as close as 2-1, but after that, Del Norte took over.

With the score 16-9, the Warriors put up six straight points on the way to the 25-11 win.

Deja Hartwick had 24 assists and nine aces for Del Norte.

Jessica Morrow and Tabitha Hillman had six digs each. Ashley Owen had 10 kills. Lisa Daniels had seven kills and Katie Rinkevicz had four kills.

This Big 5 season, Del Norte has won all its matches in three games. Curtis said the team has a goal to win all its Big 5 matches in three games. The team has five more Big 5 games left this season.

The next match will be on Tuesday at home against McKinleyville.

In the junior varsity game, the Warriors won in two games against the Tigers, winning 25-20 25-17.
