CRESCENT CITY Today the members of the Del Norte High girls tennis team hope their successful season will keep getting better at the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference Championship Tournament.
The event will take place at 10 a.m. at McKinleyville High School.
Each of the seven schools in the conference will enter players from the No. 1 to No. 6 positions.
While there will be a winner in each division, only the winner from the No. 1 seed pool will advance to the North Coast Section Singles Tournament, which will be held at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Novato on Nov. 13.
The Warriors' No. 1 seed is junior Emma Wilson, who defeated Catherine Macan of St. Bernard's last year to go on to the NCS.
Both are considered the top two players in the conference and faced each other twice this season.
While both games were highly competitive and close, Macan won both.
For the tournament, Wilson is the No. 2 seed and Macan is the No. 1 seed.
If Wilson makes it to the finals and faces Macan, Del Norte head coach Jane Rumiano believes Wilson's chances "are good in this event."
"She has nothing to lose," she said. "All the pressure is on Catherine to win. This will be an opportunity for Emma to demonstrate her ability as an all-around good athlete and tennis player and it should be a great match to watch."
In the tournament, the Warriors will have three players in the No.1 seed in their division. They are No. 2 seed Rebecca Cink, who is 10-1, No. 5 Ashleigh Speaker (9-2) and Kelsy Hintz (10-1).
The No 3. seed for Del Norte is Jennifer Gustafson and the No. 4 seed is Lauren Godla.
Rumiano hopes that all the girls will make it to the finals at their positions.
"They've shown during the season that they have all the skills and strategies to win," she said." And their determination to do well in everything they do will ensure that they advance to the finals."
"Each of them has shown improvement in different areas of their games as the season has progressed, and the whole team is really excited about participating in this event," Rumiano added.
At the tournament, the No. 1 seed in each division will receive a bye in the first round of the tourney, with the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds placed in opposite sides of the draw.
It has been a very memorable season for Del Norte, which finished the year with an 11-0 mark in the HDNC conference and took the league title. WIns included two against Arcata, who had not lost a conference match since 2005.
Recently, a match at McKinleyville was delayed due to rain. Rumiano said since it would require the girls to miss more school time, the match will not be made up.
The HDNC doubles championships will be held on Nov. 2 at McKinleyville High,
The format will be the same as for the singles championships, with Del Norte the No. 1 seed in each position.
This is because the Warriors have gone undefeated this season. If it rains on the day of the matches, the event will be held at the Eureka Indoor Tennis Club.
