The Del Norte baseball team won both of its games in the Arcata Tournament this week. The Warriors traveled to Arcata Ball Park for games against South Fork and Ferndale on Monday and Tuesday.
Del Norte (10-3) faced South Fork on Monday after Hoopa withdrew from the tournament over the weekend.
Against South Fork, Del Norte was only able to get through four innings on Tuesday before the rains postponed the game with the score tied 5-5. The Warriors went on to win 9-8 when play resumed on Tuesday.
The Warriors made quick work of Ferndale in game two, blasting the Wildcats 9-0 in six innings and winning by the eight-run tournament mercy rule.
Against South Fork, Del Norte jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Cubs fought back, however, getting one run back in the second and tying the game at 3-3 in the third inning.
Steven Maready entered the game to pitch in the fourth inning. Del Norte scored two runs to retake the lead, but the Cubs answered right back with two runs of their own before the game was delayed for rain.
When the two teams resumed play on Tuesday, the Warriors again had a big inning early, scoring four more runs in the fifth.
South Fork rebounded with three runs in the sixth inning and threatened again in the seventh inning, but Maready was able to get the third out with a line drive to left field with the bases loaded to preserve the one-run win.
Maready picked up the win for the Warriors, pitching four innings and allowing five runs on four hits, five walks, a hit batter and three strikeouts.
Bray and Nathan Porter both went 2-for-4 for Del Norte with two runs scored. Porter also added two RBI. Dylan Pease was 2-for-3 against South Fork.
Against Ferndale, Del Norte’s ace pitcher Jonathan Calderon threw another complete-game shutout.
Calderon threw all six innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out three hitters. He was also 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
Pease went 3-for-4 with two runs and another RBI against Ferndale, making him a combined 5-for-7 in the tournament.
The Warriors will not play a third game in Arcata due to Hoopa dropping out of the tournament. Del Norte will be back in action at home on May 2 for a doubleheader against Fortuna.
