The Del Norte High soccer teams dropped a pair of games at home to Eureka on Saturday, but both the Warrior boys and girls coaches still found a few bright spots in the results.

The Del Norte boys lost 6-3, while the girls were defeated 8-0.

The Warrior boys trailed Eureka 3-2 at the half. Del Norte got a long-range goal by Jesus Herrera and a goal by Alberto Barraza that came off a one-two pass combination assisted by Herrera.

Herrera scored again in the second half to tie the game on a through pass assisted by Jeffrey Aguilar, but the Loggers then scored three more times.

“Overall, we played well but we need to improve in defense and goal-keeping,” said coach David Sanyaolu. “I am proud of the boys as they showed a lot of plays we tried out in practice and they helped one another.”

One of Del Norte’s key players, Michael Marcinek, suffered a knee injury during the game, Sanyaolu said.

In the girls game, the Warriors trailed 3-0 at the half, but “we were battling them pretty good,” and goalkeeper Kira Standring was making some nice saves — close to 20 of them, said coach Clar Byers.

The second half brought more of the same — “we were quite aggressive in the second half,” said Byers. Unfortunately, the Loggers tallied three late goals, and the score got out of hand.

On the bright side, the girls roster includes 19 players and “everybody got to play,” Byers said.

The girls are scheduled to play at St. Bernard’s on Wednesday, but that game is in question after St. Bernard’s forfeited an earlier game at Del Norte due to a lack of sufficient players.

Both the Warrior boys and girls play next Saturday at South Fork in southern Humboldt County.
