The 114th Open Championship played on television in the Del Norte Golf Course clubhouse as Del Norte High School football supporters took to the golf course themselves.

The 2012 Football Booster Golf Tournament took on a British Open feel, with morning fog and cool temperatures. As the clouds burned off over time, the energy at the course picked up.

In all, members of the Del Norte Football Boosters and other contributors combined to donate about $3,500 toward Del Norte High athletics. (The Warriors football team will receive most of the funding; the girls basketball team will receive a smaller percentage.) Funds were raised through tournament entry fees, sponsorships, mulligans (to be used during the tournament), a 50/50 raffle and other means.

“It’s really amazing,” said Lesley Field, one of the tournament organizers. “We’re lucky. This community really comes out for the children.”

Several Del Norte football players participated in the event, selling 50/50 raffle tickets and washing cars in exchange for donations. Members of the Del Norte girls basketball team acted as valets, directing cars into parking places and helping supporters with their golf clubs.

“It was a good day,” junior football player Dylan Pease said. “Riding around on the golf carts was a lot of fun. We met a lot of new people who are excited for the season.”

It was important to be seen for the event — after all, the players directly benefit from the proceeds — but the players appreciated the effort required in raising funds.

“It’s hard, but good,” senior football player Ku Xiong said. “It’s worth it. It’s worth the time.”

On the course, the foursome of James Haban, Calvin Maready, Allen Winogradov and Fernando Pereira won the tournament with a combined score of 57 (14-under). Greg Dillon, Tomas Garcia, John Leuthold and Ernie Van Arsdale came in second (59, 12-under), with Luke Polidore, Cris Rice, Christian Cain and Jeff Newton taking third place (60, 11-under).

Rice won the tournament’s long drive competition, while Dale Thomas (third hole), Sue Root (fifth hole), Maready (12th hole) and Steve Gladden (14th hole) won closest-to-pin honors.
