McKINLEYVILLE — Competing at the McKinleyville wrestling tournament on Saturday, the Del Norte High wrestling squad placed second overall with 155 points. The Warriors placed the highest for teams from the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference.

Willits High came in first with 190 points.

Junior Roger McCovey, who made it to state last year, won the 275-pound weight class.

It was the first tournament of the year for McCovey and several other members of the football team, who just finished the season on the gridiron last week.

The Warriors placed several other wrestler's at the tournament. Joey Kravitz (145), Thomas Trevino (135), Grant Ivision (119), and Jordan Lacey (112) placed second in their respective divisions.

Kai Lemrise finished third at 171 pounds, Matt Valdez (152) tied for third. James Sampier (215) and Shane Endamono (140) came in fourth in their respective divisions.

In the Warriors first tournament on Dec. 1, the 25th annual Battle of the Border in Crescent City, the squad placed sixth overall, but were without several members due to football.

Head coach Aaron Schaad said his squad "wrestled aggressively" on Saturday and showed improvement from the first meet of the year.

He said the team has worked hard on their techniques and conditioning and have worked in practice to get better.

He added it was nice to have the members of the football team back this past weekend.

On Friday and Saturday, the squad competes at the Liberty Tournament in the Bay Area.

Schaad said many elite teams from the North Coast Section will take part.

"It's a good early season test," he said.
