 The first Youth Golf Fun Day in several years didn’t draw quite as many participants as organizers originally hoped for, but that turned out to be just fine according to organizer James Haban.

 Rough seas make ocean fishing difficult 

It was a good week for fishing on the Lower Klamath River as increased flows and cooler water helped to open up the spit, allowing new fish, mostly steelhead, to enter the river system. Rough seas make ocean fishing difficult on the Wild Rivers Coast, but stubborn sportfishermen were still able to have some success bottomfishing between bouts of swells.

A week from now the Warrior football team will have played their first game of the 2015 season and the Del Norte High School Athletic Hall of Fame will have welcomed six new members into the Hall.

 A pair of local teenagers got their first taste of official jet ski freeride competition on Aug. 8-9 on the Washington coast at the Grayland Open.

Joe Smith, 13, and Bailee Jones, 18, of Crescent City made the eight-hour drive north to Grayland for their first ocean freeride after both competed in a lake PWC race in Lakeview, Oregon earlier this summer.

Smith entered into the rookie class on a stand up watercraft and was able to perform the required maneuvers on Saturday to advance to the finals on Sunday where he took fourth place overall.

 Locals Blundell, Abel take first and second in annual Crescent City Triathlon on Sunday

The Crescent City Triathlon has a new overall champion this year.

After multiple second-place finishes Isaac Blundell, a 2013 Del Norte graduate heading into his junior season with the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo triathlon team, finally got over the hump taking first place in a time of 1:02:20.

“I am pretty excited to finally win this, being as close as I have been over the years,” Blundell said after the race. “This is my home race, it is the first triathlon race that I ever did. So it feels nice that I am finally at the point where I can win and do well here.”

 The Del Norte football program held its first live practice of the season on Friday with the annual Blue Gold Scrimmage, and coaches were optimistic about how the Warriors performed.

It is getting closer and closer to the time our Del Norte Warrior football team takes to the turf to face Cardinal Newman High School. They always have a good team and will provide a good test for the locals.
