Updated: Gasquet Complex grows to 900 acres

Gasquet Complex wildfires grow to 800 acres
Roughly 150 fire personnel from across the state are battling several wildfires in Six Rivers National Forest's Gasquet Ranger District that as of 9 p.m. total 910 acres in size with 2 percent contained.

In the best case scenario, the fires will only grow to several thousand acres, said Incident Commander David Kelly of Southern California Interagency Incident Command Team 2, which is managing response efforts.

“The potential for large fires is great in this area,” he said.

Meanwhile higher humidity, marine layer and smoke in the atmosphere coming from fires farther south have helped fire crews by blocking solar radiation, said Deputy Incident Commander Dan Felix. However, the weather has also made it difficult to deploy helicopters, air tankers and other aircraft.

All of the fires were sparked by lightning, according to incident command spokesman Jim Wilkins, and due to the dry conditions, more fires may be smoldering, Wilkins said.

Many of the fires can be accessed by roads, but some are located within the Siskiyou Wilderness. Wilkins said fire crews have received permission to use chainsaws, helicopters and gas-powered water portable pumps within the wilderness area.
