The mystic Bigfoot Trail

The Bigfoot Trail takes hikers through scenic areas like Red Buttes Wilderness, shown here. Courtesy of Michael Kauffmann
To the uninitiated, the Bigfoot Trail is a squiggly red line on a map, with Del Norte County’s coastal redwood groves at one end and a remote outpost some 360 miles away in Tehama County at the other.

In between lies a tumultuous sea of green: the Klamath Mountains. Neither the oldest nor the tallest peaks, they may be the most mysterious and least explored on the West Coast, famed for sightings of feral humanoids as well as plant communities that predate typical North American forest ecologies by millions of years.

For those drawn in to this rugged landscape, reliable maps and maintained trails make for a promising, if difficult to find, start. Add information sharing, much-needed trail work plus public-private entity collaboration, and a new star could be born among U.S. long-distance hiking treks.
