The Del Norte track and field team had one of its most successful meets of the season on Wednesday at the second Humboldt-Del Norte league meet of the year and the only regular season meet in Crescent City.

The Warriors swept the competition, which also included Brookings-Harbor. The boys scored 146 team points to edge out Arcata for first by nine points. The girls scored 164.5 team points, beating second-place Arcata by 62.5 points. Even the freshmen and sophomore boys posted the top JV score of the day with 152 team points.

Reel Deal: Ocean salmon season released as steelhead leave the Smith

With the steelhead recently moving out of local rivers and Lake Earl running low after being breached, fishing in Del Norte County has hit a dead period. Most anglers are now awaiting the ocean fishing season and they got good news as the Pacific Fisheries Management Council announced this week the start of the ocean salmon season will be May 1.

Smith River

The recent rains in the Northwest seem to have taken with them the last of the steelhead on the Smith River this week.

Warrior softball sweeps Tigers

Del Norte stays perfect in league play with 9-4, 10-3 wins over Arcata

The Del Norte softball team stayed perfect in Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 League play on Friday by sweeping a doubleheader in Arcata. The Warriors won the first game 9-4 and topped the Tigers 10-3 in the nightcap.

All three of Del Norte’s league wins have come against Arcata.

“Everybody did their job on defense but our offense was a little bit slow,” said Del Norte head coach Tom Moore. “We are getting it, though.”

Newton rolls perfect game in Oil League

For the second time in his life, Jeff Newton was perfect during the Oil League at Tsunami Lanes on Wednesday — for one game at least.

While bowling with his three sons on the Newton Clean Sweep Blue team, Newton was trying to break in a new bowling ball. Newton said his brand-new Storm Pearl Crux ball, which smells like root beer, helped him get off to a fast start in the first of three games with a pair of strikes in the first two frames.

“I told my boys after my second strike that I was going to get 300,” Newton said.

Warrior Memories: Longtime friend and teammate John Fraser

It is always fun to look back at former high school teammates and the great times we had together. One of these special people is John Fraser.

John was a 1951 Warrior graduate who became a teammate before we even started high school. We started playing basketball together while still at Crescent Elk, playing under the direction of Ed Fraser, John’s dad. Ed had been the head coach for the Warriors for 20 years before retiring. Ed will always be one of my all-time favorite coaches because of all the things I learned from him.

Del Norte softball kicks off league play with 12-0 victory in five innings against Arcata

The success of the Del Norte softball team in the nonconference preseason seems to have spilled over into league play. The Warriors opened Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 competition on Tuesday with a resounding 12-0 victory in five innings due to the mercy rule.

Starting pitcher and team captain Colleen Markussen controlled the game from the mound. Although she issued three walks in five innings, she also registered 10 strikeouts and didn’t allow a single hit.

Tigers spoil Warriors baseball home opener

Del Norte falls 15-1 to Arcata

The Del Norte baseball team had a rough start to Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 league play on Wednesday. The Warriors hosted Arcata at Three Amigos Field and the Tigers jumped on top early and never looked back with a 15-1 victory over Del Norte in a mercy-rule shortened five inning game.

Arcata struck fast for four runs in the top of the first inning. After Del Norte got one run back in the bottom half of the inning the Tigers ripped off three straight three run innings to grow their lead to 13-1.

“We had no intensity,” said Del Norte head coach Travis Johnson. “You can’t come out flat for a game against a good team.”

Johnson said that Del Norte has had some troubles here and there with playing with energy throughout nonconference play, but Wednesday’s game reached new levels.

“I have seen that before this year for parts of a game, but never for a whole game,” Johnson said. “I was proud of my underclassmen. My freshmen and some of my sophomores played a heck of a game and tried hard. We just need to all come together and play that way.”

With the loss, Del Norte drops to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the H-DN Big 5. The Warriors will try to turn things around on Friday when they travel to Arcata for a rematch. Del Norte will play a doubleheader against the Tigers starting at 3 p.m.

Before the Warriors make the trip, however, Johnson said they need to make sure they are mentally ready to go.

“We need to correct our intensity level and our willingness to practice hard and play hard,” Johnson said. “We need to get back to that because right now we are flat.”

The Del Norte boys golf team took advantage of its only home meet of the season on Monday as all four team members turned in solid scores.

“The kids played well,” said Del Norte head coach Kirk Burrows. “I think everyone is pleased with their scores. It was a good day and a good time.”

Although it was overcast with occasional drizzle off and on at Del Norte Golf Course, the weather held off just long enough for everybody to complete their round. Roughly five minutes after the last score card was turned in, the rain started coming down.
