Three-second rule keeps drivers safe

I don’t have any traffic safety credentials but I would like to talk about something my Dad taught me many years ago and something I believe is discussed in California’s driver safely handbook; that is: the three second rule.

The three-second rule defines a danger zone and a safety zone for when you are driving on the highway. The three second rule refers to the travel time between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.

Let’s come up with ideas to improve Crescent City

Reading today about a gentleman’s position about Crescent City going downhill (and) Brookings thriving: we need to come up with new ideas to fix things. Maybe have a contest for new ideas?

Go-kart races would bring in people not only racing but  watching. A three-day event. Even live bands tied in with a farmers market and restaurants.

Dogs off leash a problem in harbor

In Del Norte County we do have a leash ordinance although there are some who choose to let their dogs run loose, make a nuisance and harm other animals.

This is a particular problem at the Crescent City Harbor. Understood that the sheriff’s department is stretched thin responding to other crimes but at minimum there should be signs posted to inform the public where their dogs are required to be on a leash. I have dogs myself and there are many fine places in our county to take them for some exercise without allowing them to run amok on sidewalks and parking lots at the Harbor.

Will new bike trails be ADA compliant?

I hope the new trails being considered for bicyclists are in compliance with ADA Guidelines for Outdoor Developed Areas, regulation 36 CFR Part 1191, RIN 3014-AA22.

Single purpose construction, modification and improvement which blocks access to all potential handicapped users is not allowed. Why not build a trail for all users? Guidelines are readily available at the United States Access Board website.

Thanks go out for a beautiful Fourth

Thanks to Bryant Anderson for the spectacular fireworks picture in the paper. That’s a keeper. And, thanks to the man upstairs for the weather allowing the wonderful fireworks display on the Fourth.

‘Rocky’ Peterson plaque should be in the public view

Reading Dick Trone’s sports page column in the July 2 edition of the Del Norte Triplicate titled “38 grad Roscoe ‘Rocky’ Peterson” is very

Finigan pats his back while Gitlin takes on issues

Last week’s Triplicate account of the Board of Supervisors meeting re: sparring over homelessness panel was second rate and inadequate.

The disingenuous self-serving District 5 Supervisor David Finigan had himself appointed as the county representative to the Ad Hoc Committee for Community Homelessness. Maybe the community is unaware that 61 percent of the voter electorate in District 5 voted against Finigan in the June primary.

Tragic fire shows our great need for volunteer firefighters

In regards to the house fire in Klamath, I want to give thanks to everyone in our community who provide for our safety. Had it not been for Cal Fire, this situation would have surely escalated. Having seen news reports of terrible fires burning throughout California, stretching Cal Fire resources statewide, it is surely a miracle only one home burned. I hope this tragedy can bring positive changes with greater awareness that volunteer firefighters are desperately needed.

Kudos to Smith R. PO

I would like to commend the Smith River post office. The postmaster, Ken, and his assistant, Lisa, and others who work there are always courteous, helpful and often go way out of their way to accommodate and help those who use this post office.

Thanks to Cal Fire for quick response

I have listened to a variety of remarks concerning the Fire Prevention Fee imposed on Del Norte county property owners.
