Leave Prop 13 alone

Regarding Thomas Elias’ column mentioning proposed Prop 13 repeal for business property:
According to a recent blog by David Stockman, formerly Reagan’s budget director, the real current national unemployment rate is a
jaw-dropping 42.9 percent, not the 5.5 percent figure publicly released.

A near-perfect trip and a returned purse

On June 23 my daughter forgot her purse on the rocks by the lighthouse in Crescent City. After a frantic search a few hours later,  she started making the needed calls to cancel her debit and credit cards, etc. As a family we resolved not to allow this to dampen our spirits on our family vacation.

Berkowitz’ ad is full of one-sentence falsehoods

To anyone who has been following the trials of the Solid Waste Authority for the past several years, the recent and very detailed Grand Jury report on the public agency was little more than a public release of what we have known all along. Now we have a full page ad in the Triplicate (page A3, June 25) paid for by a private citizen, Bob Berkowitz, attacking the report. The jurors did their homework, and a great deal of it, and now Bob is asking us to disagree with its finding based on single-sentence statements of his own. Let’s look at these:

Facts speak volumes in Grand Jury Report

I am writing in my promised response to anyone misquoting the amount that went missing over a period of 10 years from the Solid Waste Management Authority. According to the Grand Jury Report, the amount ranges according to who is asked. The Triplicate reported more than a year ago that the actual figure for the unaccounted money was closer to $9,000.

Prevent cell phone bullying

You recently had an article (“School district sued over bullying case,” April 25) concerning bullying at Redwood School.

Grand Jury ignores theft and follows double standard

When I read the Grand Jury Report, I said to myself we will finally get to the bottom of all of the Solid Waste Authority controversy. What a disappointment!

Bias evident in report from the Grand Jury

I just read the 2014–15 Del Norte County Grand Jury Report, and I am more than a little perplexed. Commenting on the Solid Waste Authority missing funds, the Grand Jury could not find evidence of the exact quantity of money that was missing, yet they had full access to the Scanlon Report, which showed that the amount was exactly $25,732.15. What prevented the Grand Jury from accepting the Scanlon Report as accurate?

Not everybody wants to
get out of this town, Oprah

I take offense at the idea that Ms. Oprah Winfrey may have made the statement, “Get me out of this dirty town.” I also take offense at Mr. Gitlin giving it credence by repeating it (“Coastal Voices: Volunteers ‘Take a Bite out of Blight,’” June 6). Not everyone can afford to live in Montecito nor any of the other locations where she owns property.

To the City Council and all citizens of Del Norte:

July 4 is just around the corner. Please have in place an ordinance forbidding candy to be thrown from vehicles in the parade.
