Peanut-fed crows leave unwanted mess

This letter is long overdue, but we kept hoping people would stop feeding whole peanuts in the shell to crows.

We live close to Pacific and Pebble Beach, where large flocks of crows fly in and plant those same peanuts in our yard, the flower pots and the rain gutters.

Pick your own doctor, as long as it’s Sutter’s

This letter is regarding the recent insurance offer to CalPERS members in Del Norte County. On Jan. 8, 2015, a letter was mailed to the insureds to offer them Anthem Blue Cross Del Norte Exclusive Provider Organization. Sutter Coast Hospital and Sutter Health-affiliated doctors are the only options for treatment in the EPO network.

The most glaring problem is that this EPO policy would not reach across county lines. Now add to this Sutter’s decision to downsize Sutter Coast to a Critical Access Hospital with a maximum of 25 acute care beds and a maximum average length of stay of four days. If you are the 26th person in need of hospitalization, you get shipped somewhere else!

Photographer’s column is a welcome addition

I very much enjoyed the Bryant Anderson photos “The little things in a redwood grove” (Northcoast Life, B1) in the Jan. 24 edition of the Triplicate. Both my wife and I have been fans of Anderson’s photography for years. And not just his hard news photos, but his human interest and nature photos as well.

DN emergency responders serve with professionalism

In late December, two friends and I made the drive to Crescent City’s South Beach for a chance to surf some of the fine waves often available when conditions are too rough or stormy down in Humboldt County.

Upon arrival, the sun was out and conditions looked inviting. Wasting no time, we put on our wetsuits and hit the water. After a few waves I got out, dried off and changed into street clothes while watching my friends exchange waves. Soon after, one of my friends also paddled in.

Caring treatment after Life Flight to Redding

On Aug. 12 a member of our household fell and broke his hip. 911 was called, and he was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City. On arrival there, it was determined that there were no orthopedic surgeons available to operate on him. Sutter Coast located an orthopedic surgeon at Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

This transfer from Sutter Coast to Mercy was made via Life Flight. The transfer cost was five figures.

Community deserves anwers to questions about hospital

My recent experiences with Sutter Coast shows me the quality of care has gone down, with long waits and less care.

How come the hospital board is not talking to other companies to come in and expand (not downsize) this hospital?

If Sutter values community, why won’t it be transparent?

As a Del Norte resident, I believe we have a right to be informed about our local health care, and I have some questions about that.

If the application for Critical Access Hospital status is denied, will Sutter Coast still be able to stay open? I read that SCH showed a financial profit last year. Is that true or is the hospital still losing money?

Elementary students loved Christmas gifts from prison

On Dec. 19, the Mary Peacock Elementary School community was blessed to receive an amazing gift from the employees at Pelican Bay State Prison. More accurately, we were blessed to receive over 115 gifts!  The PBSP employees made sure that every kindergarten and first-grade student received something that was on his/her Christmas wish list. Mrs. Claus made cookies for each child and the gifts were delivered by Santa and his elves.

It brought such joy to the students and their families.  Children were amazed to find bicycles, scooters, dolls, art supplies and even camping gear. Many children exclaimed, “This is just what I wanted!  How did Santa know?”

Take a stand against the ‘filth in our midst’

Why have we allowed the street people, alcoholics, addicts and bums to make us fearful on the streets and prisoners in our homes? Why do we allow them to make our parks and beaches unsafe  for our children to play in, unless you want them to see the lowlifes urinating, defecating and puking? Do you know how many local businesses have been driven out by them?  So many men have stories of their wives and daughters being accosted by these poor unfortunates for spare change and other unmentionables. Seniors are robbed and assaulted in their bedrooms, for goodness’ sake.

Community’s generosity was a big help to girl with autism

First off I want to say sorry this thank-you letter is late. I am the grandmother to Zyon Koon. She has autism. She needed more testing than what she could get done here to help us help her.

I am writing this letter to the citizens of Del Norte County. In November when we needed help with money for transportation costs and lodging, you all came through for her. For this a big thank you very much. We appreciated the help with finances during my granddaughter’s time of need. She made it to UCSF and had the tests done. She still needs more tests done, but for now she is doing fine. We have great businesses in this town that let us put our cans out for collection. To them we especially give you a big thank you.
