Nothing separated the Del Norte and Fortuna wrestling teams when the dual ended in a 42-42 tie after 14 matches. In fact, both teams were still neck and neck after reading the first seven tiebreakers in the rule book.

The Warriors victory over Fortuna on Wednesday in Thunen Gym came down to tiebreaker H — the first wrestler to score points in each match. Based on that, Del Norte won eight to four.

The Del Norte boys basketball team had another chance to hand league leading Arcata its first Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 loss of the season on Tuesday in Thunen Gym, but once again the Tigers were able to do just enough to escape Crescent City with a 52-47 victory.

The Warriors took a 27-26 advantage into halftime after a buzzer-beating three pointer from Dayton Skeen, but the third quarter was all Arcata. The Tigers outscored Del Norte 20-11 in the third to grab an eight point lead heading into the final period.

DN girls basketball falls 51-39 in Fortuna

The Del Norte girls basketball team had trouble finding the hoop on Friday in Fortuna as the Warriors dropped a 51-39 contest to the Huskies.

The Warriors came out strong defensively with sophomore Claire Smith setting the tone in the first quarter.

Reel Deal: Boats getting back on Smith and Chetco this week

The promises of big rains this week were largely unfulfilled, and local anglers were able to take advantage of the week-long mostly dry spell to get back out on driftboats as the Smith River has rounded into shape this week. The Chetco River also had a brief window for driftboats on Wednesday before the river blew back out on Thursday morning. Although the boats have been able to get back out on the water, anglers are still reportedly having luck hauling in steelhead from shore.

Warrior Memories: Passing of a Warrior fanatic, lifelong friend

It is with a heavy heart, but a lot of love and respect that I feel as I write this column.

With the passing of Jordan Kekry, the community has lost a great citizen, the Warrior family lost one of their longest supporters, and I lost a very special high school teammate and lifelong friend.

The Del Norte boys basketball team blew the lid off of what was previously a close league game against Fortuna by outscoring the Huskies 22-6 in the third quarter as the Warriors coasted to a 65-50 victory in Thunen Gym Wednesday.

The game started out quickly with each team scoring on their first three possessions as Del Norte grabbed a 7-6 advantage, but the Huskies dominated the last four minutes of the quarter to grab an 18-13 lead.

Del Norte answered with five straight points to open the second quarter with a three pointer from Jonathan Valladares and a long jumper by Austin Healy. The teams entered halftime tied up at 27-27.

DN wrestlers flip the script in 2nd duel

Del Norte’s Freddy Colegrove got Arcata’s Sawyer Robertson in a cradle for a pin in the 170-pound match to give the Warriors an 18-6 lead early in the team’s 61-16 duel victory over the Tigers. It was Del Norte’s first home duel of the season. Del Norte Triplicate / Michael Zogg
The Del Norte wrestling team’s second duel of the season against Arcata was a mirror image of its first.

The Warriors opened the duel season with a rough start in Eureka, leading to a 58-18 loss. On Tuesday, Del Norte wrestled its first duel in Thunen Gym and this time it was the Warriors that got off to a hot start en route to a comfortable 61-16 victory over the Tigers.

“The boys wrestled well,” said Del Norte head coach Clinton Schaad. “It was the exact opposite of the Eureka duel. It was the same kids, but we wrestled better. Momentum is a big thing and we came out and got it early. There were a couple tough matches tonight that we would like to have back of course, you always want to improve, but I am proud of the boys.”

Del Norte girls whip Wildcats 60-26

The Del Norte girls basketball team jumped ahead of visiting Ferndale early and continued to expand its lead in every quarter en route to a 60-26 blowout win in the Warriors’ last non-Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 game of the year Wednesday.

“It was a non-league game, so we just wanted to make sure that everybody got into the game,” said Del Norte head coach Jeff Cook. “We weren’t looking past Ferndale, but we have been practicing for Friday’s game against Fortuna.”

All 11 Warriors on the roster saw a good chunk of playing time in the game and 10 found the basket in a balanced offensive attack for Del Norte.
