First win over Eureka in 8 years 

The Del Norte girls soccer team finished the season on a high note, beating Eureka 3-2 in a closely contested season finale in Crescent City.

“Overall it was a very good game; it was very fun,” said Del Norte head coach Clar Byers. “Eureka was a little bit weakened, playing without a lot of their senior players (due to several injuries).”

Shorthanded Warriors struggle, but pull together in the tie-breaking set to come away with the win 

The Del Norte volleyball team got pushed to the limit by McKinleyville at home on senior night, but the Warriors were able to pull out the 3-2 (25-22, 30-32, 25-18, 15-25, 15-10) victory over the Panthers in Thunen Gym.

“It was a struggle,” said Del Norte head coach Debbie Lorenzi. “My seniors wanted to win on senior night so badly, and I think they wanted to win too badly and were playing like they were afraid to lose.”

The Del Norte boys soccer team closed out its season with two straight games against the top teams in the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 conference. The Warriors fell 14-2 in Fortuna on Tuesday and lost 13-0 at home to Arcata Wednesday.

“The boys gave their all today, but we were just limited because we don’t have a firm grasp on the fundamentals,” said Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu. “We couldn’t hold the ball.”


Fitzhugh takes 10th at Div. II NCS meet

The Del Norte girls golf season wrapped up on Monday as Siera Fitzhugh took 10th place in the Division II North Coast Section Championships at the Blue Springs Golf Course in Vallejo.


A chance to clinch the HDN Big 5 title

The last time the Del Norte football team faced Fortuna, it was hoping to snap its 12-game losing streak. This time, the Warriors hope to put the finishing touches on an outright Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 league championship on senior night on Whalen Field.

Del Norte enters the game with a perfect 5-0 record in HDN play this season. Coming into the season, the Warriors had lost 12 straight games to the defending HDN champion Huskies, but Del Norte finally got that monkey off of its back with a 26-7 victory in Fortuna’s homecoming game.

Arcata blows by Del Norte 14-0 

The Del Norte girls soccer team dropped a pair of games this week, falling 3-0 in Fortuna on Tuesday and 14-0 at home to Arcata on Wednesday. 

Warriors’ head coach Clar Byer said his team played well in Fortuna and were able to threaten the Huskies’ goal at times, but an early own goal on a corner kick gave the Huskies the lead and they were able to score one of their own in both the first and second halves.

 


Lara takes second for DN cross country at Mack

The Del Norte cross country team wrapped up the regular season with some significant improvement on Wednesday in McKinleyville.

Jesus Lara ran his fastest time of the season, cutting about 53 seconds off of his time in Arcata two weeks ago. He finished in second place overall with a time of 15:44.20, edging out a runner from Arcata who is currently ranked fourth in the Redwood Empire.

Del Norte Youth Football season ends at Whalen Field on Sunday; Warriors win three of six 

The 2014 Six Rivers Youth Football regular season came to a close on Sunday, with each of the Del Norte team’s finishing up at home on Whalen Field.

In A, Del Norte gold fell 13-0 to McKinleyville to finish third in the final standings with a 5-2 record. It will face Eureka in the first round of the playoffs at Redwood Fields on Sunday.

DN JV football continues on its quest for a perfect season with win in Eureka 

The Del Norte junior varsity football team has gotten off to an incredible 8-0 start this season.

While any team still undefeated this late in the year is undoubtedly talented, sometimes it also takes a little bit of luck. That was the case on Friday when the Warriors broke a 6-6 tie in the last minute of the game to escape Eureka with a 12-6 victory.


DN tennis plays well at HDN singles

The Del Norte tennis team had a strong showing at a truncated Humboldt-Del Norte singles tennis championship on Saturday in Eureka.

The meet was originally scheduled to take place in Fortuna, but due to inclement weather it was forced to move to indoor courts in Eureka. With just three indoor courts, the league decided to play only the No. 1, 2 and 3 brackets.
