Death Notice: Steve Pyke

Steve Pyke died April 9, 2015, in Medford, Ore., at the age of 65. He was born Aug. 24, 1949, and was a lifelong resident of Del Norte County. 

There will be a potluck and celebration of life on April 25 from 1–4 p.m. at Redwood Family Worship Center (corner of Parkway Drive and English Lane).

John Leslie Simmons Jr.
John Leslie Simmons Jr., born April 23, 1922, in Blythe,  passed away on April 10, 2015, in Crescent City at the age of 92. He was a 60-year resident of Del Norte County. 

John was a WWII veteran of the Army Air Corp. He flew as flight engineer over the Himalayan Mountains to supply bases in China. John earned his pilot’s license after the war.  

While in Del Norte County, he worked in the trucking and lumber industries as a driver, mechanic and machinist. Friends and family could always rely on uncle John to find a way or make a part to fix almost anything.

Dorotha Ann Lawry was taken home to see her Lord on April 2, 2015. Dorotha was a resident of Crescent City for 50-plus years. 

In June 2014, Dorotha celebrated her 90th birthday with her family and close friends. The day was all about her. 


Death Notice: Edna Caroline Mattz

Edna Caroline Mattz died April 10, 2015, just five days after her 95th birthday. Born April 5, 1920, in Harbor, Ore., Edna was a lifelong resident of Del Norte County.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 16, at 2:30 p.m. at the Foursquare Church with interment to follow at the Del Norte County Veterans Cemetery.

Terri Lee Cromwell
Terri Lee Cromwell passed away at home March 27, 2015. Terri was born in Fortuna, Sept. 15, 1956, the daughter of James Ivan and Betty Louise Floyd.

Terri was the last of four children, and her nephews were like brothers to her. She attended school in Alturas and Crescent City. She was a 49-year resident of Crescent City.

Edna Caroline Mattz
Edna Caroline Mattz went to be with the Lord on April 10, 2015, just five days after her 95th birthday. Born April 5, 1920, in Harbor, Ore., Edna moved with her family to Crescent City when she was 9 years old, and she was a lifelong resident of Del Norte County.

Edna was a nurse at the County Hospital and the Convalescent Hospital, a member of the Seaside Hospital Pink Ladies, a hospice worker, served on the election board, was a member of the Republican Women, a member of the Crescent City Foursquare Church where she served as Sunday school teacher and vacation Bible school teacher. She loved hunting and
camping.

Read more...Idolah Reynolds died April 7, 2015, after a short illness. Born in Oklahoma, she grew up and lived most of her life in Oklahoma. Idolah graduated from high school in June 1957. 

At the age of 18 Idolah moved to Vacaville, Calif. She was a homemaker.

Valeria Ann Thompson passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 2, 2015. She was surrounded by loved ones. Valeria was born on Feb. 21, 1953. She was the oldest child of Charles and Thelma Whipple. 

Valeria was known for her beautiful laugh, which was immediately recognized by those that knew her. One of her favorite pastimes was the game of crib with family and friends. Friends and family were always welcome in her home for visiting, a game of crib and food. Valeria Ann loved her grandchildren. She always dropped to the floor to play with them. Playing hide and seek was a favorite and brought much laughter to everyone.

Mary Ann Mayes
Mary Ann Mayes, age 80, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2015, at home after a long battle with cancer. Mary was born Aug. 14, 1934, in Bonanza, Ore., the daughter of Earl H. and Gladys A. Silva.

Mary thoroughly enjoyed reading, crocheting and spending time with family and friends. She was a foster parent to many children and worked as a teacher’s aide for 21 years.
