The Yurok Tribe’s 52nd annual cultural celebration kicks off Saturday morning in Klamath

The Yurok Tribe will share their traditions and culture as well as an important staple of their diet with the public on Saturday.

The 52nd Annual Klamath Salmon Festival includes live music, a parade, traditional games and an Indian card game tournament. Veterans will be treated to a special breakfast in the morning. The celebration will culminate with a salmon lunch.

Shopping cart races add a fun and funky twist to the contests at Smith River Days. Del Norte Triplicate file
The Smith River Heritage Association’s largest event turns 10 this year and will celebrate the occasion with shopping cart races, lawn mower races and — new this year — a bucket brigade contest.

The annual Smith River Days festival starts with a pancake breakfast, which benefits the community’s volunteer fire department as well as a parade featuring Smith River School’s Wildcat Band and drill team. Vendors will be selling food and other items up and down First Street, and there will be live music from at least nine entertainers.

Folks are invited to escape the fog of the coast and gaze at the star-studded sky above the Schoolhouse Peak Fire Lookout in the Bald Hills area of Redwood National and State Parks.

Redwood Parks Association will host its annual star party Aug. 23 and 24, featuring renowned astronomer Dr. Robert Scheppler.

Austin man walking down coast with dogs to raise funds for cancer research 

Luke Robinson met up with C. Ivan Stoltzfus at the KOA campground just outside Crescent City this weekend. But while Stoltzfus had completed his cross-country trek by tractor on Saturday (see story on Page A1), Robinson was more than 800 miles away from finishing his journey.

Robinson and his two great Pyrenees, 8-year-old Hudson and and 3-year-old Indiana Jones, have spent the past three months hoofing it from Peace Arch Park at the Canadian border through Washington and Oregon.
