Obituary: Donald James Hemmingsen (1948 - January 4, 2016)

Donald James Hemmingsen, affectionately called “Donnie” by family and friends, passed away Jan. 4, 2016 at the age of 67. Donnie was the first born child of Don and Mary Hemmingsen, who preceded him in death. Donnie attended local schools and graduated from Del Norte High School in 1966. He attended College of the Redwoods briefly before he received his draft notice in the late ‘60s, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He learned to be a helicopter mechanic and finished as an MP (military police) in Alameda, California. He was a gifted mechanic and worked at Mor-Jon, Inc. for a while. He was also a truck driver for John Rycraft, Northcrest, Inc., and Hemmingsen Construction, just to name a few. He had his own truck for a while before starting a mobile welding service. Donnie brought his dad’s commercial fishing boat, the “Kim B,” from Texas through the Panama Canal. He also worked at Castle Rock Seafood and eventually was employed (and retired from) working on and driving heavy equipment for the Del Norte County Road Department. Donnie enjoyed driving fast motorcycles and cars, hunting and fishing, and in his retirement enjoyed operating remote control four-wheel drive trucks and helicopters. We can remember Donnie always getting in trouble for “picking” on us and mom saying, “Donnie, sit on your hands.” Donnie is survived by siblings Jane (George) Lincoln of Citrus Heights, California, Gerry (Luanne) Hemmingsen of Crescent City, California, Jeff (Gail) Hemmingsen of Chico, California, and Marianne (Karl) Beyerle of Hiouchi, California. He is survived by sons Neil (Colby) Hemmingsen of Grants Pass, Oregon, and Donald Ross Hemmingsen (Megan) of Smith River, California. Donnie has grandchildren Kaemin, Norrin and Ares of Grants Pass, Oregon, and Nathaniel Hemmingsen of Smith River, California. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.

Obituary: Jordan Kekry (July 4, 1933 – January 25, 2016)

Jordan Kekry
Jordan was born on July 4, 1933 to his parents, Louis Kekrides and Maria Zabounides, both European immigrants. He and his older sister, Martha, were raised on his parent’s farm, at the end of 5th Street in Crescent City. His family enjoyed being part of the extended Greek community that existed in town during those years. Jordan played baseball, football and basketball in high school, and graduated from Del Norte High in 1951. He was drafted and served at Fort Lewis, Washington in the Signal Corp from 1953-1955 during the Korean Conflict. He married Grayce Gorton in January 1958, and they had three daughters – Julie, Melinda and Sandra. He worked for McNamara & Peepe Lumber Company, Endert Distributing, and Miller Redwood.

In 1969, Jordan purchased the local Anheuser Busch Distributorship, which at the time was a one-man operation. Over the next 30 years the business grew and Jordan became known as “The Bud Man.” Always wanting to give to the community he loved, he worked to bring the Clydesdales, the Budweiser hot air balloon, and the Budweiser speed boat to this small, remote community – not an easy thing to accomplish. During those years, Jordan and his beer van were a fixture at the 4th of July Beer Garden down at Beach Front Park and other community events, always surrounded by people laughing, telling stories and enjoying the festivities.
