Alums make college mark

Read more...You can’t win 23 league championships in 33 years without plenty of talented players, and that is just what the Del Norte volleyball program has produced through the years.

This week, senior Kayla Costello signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball at Humboldt State University next year, becoming the latest in a long line of Warriors to make the jump to the ranks of college volleyball.

This year alone, four Del Norte alums continued their volleyball careers at the college level. Not only were Ashley Owen, Keirstyn Anderson, Kaitlyn Clemann and Ashton Smedley all on college rosters, but all four girls started all season and proved to be indispensable pieces of their respective teams.

Seniors Jordan Babich and Debbie Yang put the finishing touches on their high school tennis careers on Tuesday by finishing fourth overall in the North Coast Section Division II doubles championships at San Rafael High School and brought home a medal for their efforts.

“We are definitely pleased with what they accomplished — finishing fourth in the entire North Coast Section,” said Del Norte head coach Samuel Escobar. “We are pleased with that and we were amazed at how well they played in the first match.”

Just weeks after senior captain Kayla Costello led the Del Norte volleyball team to its second straight Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 co-league title and an appearance in the North Coast Section Division III tournament, she signed her National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at Humboldt State University next season.

In the end, it was a fairly easy decision for Costello to join the Lumberjacks next year.

“They offered me a scholarship and I was thinking about playing there anyway, so that pretty much settled it,” Costello said.

Warriors ready for tough NCS road test

After an emphatic 56-0 home victory over Lower Lake in the first round of the North Coast Section Division IV playoffs, the Del Norte football team will head out on the road, likely for the remainder of its postseason run.

The fifth-seeded Warriors (9-2) will travel roughly 5½ hours south to Novato to take on No. 4 San Marin (8-3) in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Warrior MMA loses fights, but picks up pride at Char-ae Heights

Warrior MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) lost its fights at the “Quest for Title” in Trinidad at the Cher-ae Heights Casino on Saturday, but both local fighters were able to hold their heads high after some hard-fought matches.

Del Norte allows just 36 yards of total offense to Lower Lake in 56-0 first-round NCS victory

The heavy rain that pounded fans, coaches and players alike at Whalen Field for most of the first half on Friday night eventually let up, but the Del Norte defense never relented as the Warriors shut out Lower Lake 56-0 in a first-round rout in the North Coast Section Division IV football playoffs.

“It is so important to get that first playoff win,” said Del Norte head coach Ray Rook. “It kind of had the same feel as last year when we went to Justin-Siena. You just don’t know how the kids are going to react to the playoff game and the atmosphere, but everything was business as usual. On the first play of the game I could see the kids came to play.”

After a bit of a dry spell, rain has returned to the region to recharge coastal rivers with fresh salmon, and this weekend is likely to be one of the busiest for salmon fishing on the Smith yet this season.

Smith River

The Smith River was certainly on the high end for drift boats on Friday, but that didn’t stop many anglers from getting a chance at fresh salmon.

Local fighter gets shot at state title

Warrior MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) member Matt Chadwick will have a shot at the International Sport Combat Federation (ISCF) MMA 155-pound California State Title — currently a vacant title — at Cher-ae Heights Casino’s “Quest for the Title” in Trinidad. The event date previously published in the Triplicate was incorrect; the fight will take play on Saturday, Nov. 15.

Del Norte falls 3-0 to Miramonte’s size, experience in first round of North Coast Section playoffs

The size disparity was nothing new. Del Norte volleyball has been smaller than nearly every opponent it has played this year, yet still managed to win 23 games. But Miramonte combined its size with experience, not just in high school but at the club level, that the Warriors just couldn’t match.

No. 11-seeded Del Norte fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-18) to the sixth-seeded Matadors in Thunen Gym on Thursday in the first round of the North Coast Section Division III playoffs.
