Community won’t benefit from harbor fishing closure

First the harbor closed off a public access and tsunami escape route on the northeast corner of the parking lot. Now they are closing the inner boat basin to fishing.

Most California property owners aren’t paying Cal Fire annual fee

To the property owners in California who have been asked to pay an annual “fee” to Cal Fire, you can stand proud.

Supervisor Gitlin will be rewarded in heaven

Kudos to Roger and those who stand with him for holding firm to the ways of our Founding Fathers and to the belief in our Heavenly Father, who teaches us to bring all things to him in prayer.

Coastal Voices: Pedestrians, cyclists should watch for cars

Three feet for the safety of those on bicycles may be a nice idea. As a law, it’s not.

The article in Tuesday’s Triplicate also mentioned “distracted drivers” as a potential problem. Distracted drivers? What about distracted pedestrians?

McElfresh would bring real change to Del Norte courts

Darren McElfresh is a good choice to vote for in the Superior Court judge race. I have lived in Crescent City 41 years and I have yet to meet a person running for a political office that has such an interest in the betterment of our community. His support for the youth and desire to get help for children and families are inspiring.

Murray’s accusations were unsubstantiated

The recent article (“Murray calls out Gitlin,” Sept. 13) about City Council member Kathryn Murray’s charges against Roger Gitlin was disgusting on a couple of levels. She basically says Gitlin is anti-female based on what is probably a made-up alleged conversation with him and complaints by some “unnamed” women.

Vet rehab program underway

From the pages of the Del Norte Triplicate, September 1958:

As deer hunters began making plans to go on their annual hunting trips, Louis Tosio, chairman of the Elks Lodge veterans rehabilitation committee, reminded them this week to save their hides and turn them over to the Elks Lodge.

The hides, which may be left at Cowen’s market, Pacific Market or the Del Norte Ice and Cold Storage Plant, will be used in veterans hospitals for leather craft work as part of the California Elks Association veteran’s rehabilitation.

Coastal Voices: Deck is stacked against change on board

Two and you’re done. I have been following with great interest the ongoing dynamics on the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors. Despite the misleading editorial in the Triplicate (“Supervisor Gitlin must salvage his term on board, if he can,” Aug. 30), it appears clear the long-sleeping public has now awakened and the public is none-too-happy with the “business as usual” practices from this moribund board.

Vote for Measure F; keep the fair for the community

There are few things that bind a community together. One of these is the annual fair. I can’t imagine what Del Norte County would be like without this one event, not to mention the hundreds of other events that take place on the fairgrounds each year. That’s why I urge your support for Measure F. It’s important for all of us.

Matt Heath,

Republican candidate for California’s 2nd Assembly District

Coastal Voices: When 9/11 plus 200 equals 1: American resilience continues

It was a day that portended of purpose, blessed in a new job with an opportunity to protect children and possibly help some folks who have been battling an affliction I wrestled with over a decade ago. It began with a call to old friend Jim Rome on his CBS Sports Radio talk show, commencing with a comment on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
