NOAA predicts wetter winter for SoCal, uncertainty for rest of state 

While the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had good news for much of the country on Thursday with the release of its winter forecast, predictions for the next few months in Northern California were more reserved.

Although parts of the state could get above-average rain and snowfall this winter, it won’t be enough to end the drought, which in 60 percent of California is classified as “exceptional.”

Judge wanted stiffer penalty than plea deal allowed 

A Del Norte Superior Court judge and the Del Norte County district attorney say a former Crescent Elk employee arrested last year on charges of inappropriately touching middle school girls shouldn’t be working in a school setting, but that’s exactly what he’s doing after the judge rejected a plea agreement for being too soft and the DA dismissed the case for lack of evidence.


Big 5 to hold hiring fair today

New businesses are bringing several dozen new jobs to Del Norte County. 

Big 5 Sporting Goods is teaming up with the Del Norte Workforce Center on Tuesday for a hiring event that they hope will net at least 25 people for the new store in Crescent City.


Five in race for City Council

Creating and maintaining a business-friendly community, maintaining the city’s infrastructure and making the town attractive for visitors are top priorities for the five Crescent City Council candidates.

Each candidate sat down with the Triplicate and outlined their ideas of how to either bring those priorities about or expand on what the council has already accomplished.


Sparks fly at forum for Library Board hopefuls

A candidate forum for the Del Norte County Library District turned into something of a showdown Wednesday between two of the three challengers and the person seeking re-election.

Incumbent Dennis Sutton, who has been a trustee for more than 12 years, spent much of the evening defending the board’s actions during his tenure as its chair. He also tried to offer explanations of why a surplus of nearly $400,000 wasn’t included in the library’s budget.

Big Mountain plays tonight at the Crescent City Elks Lodge.
The Crescent City Elks Lodge will host some more reggae grooves on Tuesday when Big Mountain comes to town.

The show is open to patrons 21 years or older. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the show beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and can be purchased at Del Norte Office Supply and at brownpapertickets.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $25.


Local unemployment down in September

Del Norte County’s preliminary September jobless rate fell from 9.6 percent in August to 8.5 percent in September, compared to 10.3 percent in September 2013. 

The comparable, not seasonally adjusted California rate (6.9 percent) is down 0.6 percent from August, according to the state’s Labor Market Information Division.


News of Record Oct. 10–16, 2014

These are the misdemeanor and felony sentencings provided by the Del Norte County Superior Court for the dates of Oct. 10–16:

Cory Orensico, 25, Crescent City, was sentenced to three years of probation and fined $1,752 for possession of a dangerous drug (felony) and possession of paraphernalia.


School Board candidate forum tonight

Klamath residents today have a chance to hear from a handful of candidates running for the Del Norte County Unified School District Board of Trustees.

True North Organizing Network is hosting a candidates night designed to draw attention to the specific educational needs of Margaret Keating Elementary School, one of the lowest performing schools in the district, according to a press release from the organization.
