 Black snappers plentiful near harbor while salmon still elusive; halibut opens again July 1 

The fish in the ocean have held the status quo for another week. In what has become the trend this spring and early summer, ocean sportfishermen have been reporting plenty of black snappers and lingcod available around Crescent City. Meanwhile the salmon seem to be stubbornly holding in deep water, and anglers aren’t having much luck hooking them yet this year.

Del Norte 11–12 year-olds finish 2-2, 9–10 year-olds go 1-2 at districts

Del Norte Little League baseball has strong representation at the Oregon District 8 tournament this year as both the 9- and 10-year olds team and the 11- and 12-year-olds team came away from the competition with at least one win.


Warrior Memories: Hug more meaningful than wins or honors

On May 31st I was in Yucca Valley to be inducted into the Yucca Valley Athletic Hall of Fame as the first football coach and first athletic director of the high school. It was an honor to receive this award. I have had the privilege of  coaching for two great schools. The only reason I ever would have left Yucca was to come back to my hometown and coach, my dream job.

The Del Norte girls tennis team will be conducting a junior tennis clinic 11 a.m. to noon from June 30 to July 16 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Jane Rumiano will be the head coach for the clinic, with members of the high school team serving as assistants.

Crescent City got a 12-member team together, the Crabby Crew, to compete in the 214-mile Rogue River Relay last Friday and Saturday.  The first run in the heat of Applegate Valley was both beautiful and difficult through the rolling hills of farms and wineries. Those of us from the coast are not used to running in 80-plus degree heat!

The Northwest Trail Riders, a local group of horse enthusiasts, hosted one of its six annual events, the Cowboy Trail Challenge, on July 14 at the Cadra Ranch at the end of Old Mill Road.

Traditionally, collared shirts and business slacks are commonplace on most golf courses throughout the country. Some clubs even go so far as to enforce dress codes and suspend their members or members’ guest privileges if such codes aren’t respected and upheld.

 16 teams turn out at Kings Valley Golf Course for annual tournament, Habans take first place

The annual Father’s Day Golf Tournament brought 16 dads and their progeny out to Kings Valley Golf Course on Sunday. The father-son and father-daughter teams competed in a doubles best ball format for cash and other prizes.
