Pages of History: Landmark hotel burns

From the pages of the Del Norte Triplicate, October 1958:

Twenty years ago

One of the most picturesque and historical landmarks in Del Norte County, the Douglas Park Hotel building, was destroyed by fire of unknown origin Monday night.

Apperson’s campaign for ‘change’ surprising

This is not to disparage an exemplary police officer and patrol supervisor, but as I read the Sept. 27 Triplicate article titled “Sheriff hopefuls hash out platforms,” I was somewhat astonished to read Erik Apperson’s announced plan to rely on the now-famous rallying call of Barack Obama to propel him into the office of the chief law enforcement officer of Del Norte County.

Del Norte deserves the best judge for the job: Chris Doehle

Our local political offices are non-partisan, and I feel free as a Republican to openly endorse whomever I choose to be the better candidate.  I strongly support Chris Doehle and hope you do, too, for all the right reasons.

Let Wilson continue to do the ‘very best job’

I have known and worked with both sheriff candidates over the last 14 years. I can tell you from firsthand experience and knowledge that only one candidate has the integrity and experience to run this sheriff’s office, and that is Dean Wilson.

Pages of History: Kids’ pets net owners many prizes

Judge’s decision on Moore puts the community at risk

As a woman, I can’t believe that Chris Doehle would put our safety and security at risk.

Candidate Apperson isn’t qualified to be police chief

Several months ago my wife and I had a discussion as to why Erik Apperson is seeking the position of sheriff of Del Norte County and not pursuing the position of chief of police for Crescent City with the retirement of Doug Plack. During the past week or so it became very evident by reading several articles in the Triplicate.

No need to restructure Solid Waste Authority

Some time ago a supervisor was quoted in the paper (“Consultant report on Waste Authority draws mixed response,” April 4) saying that the Solid Waste Authority should function more as a utility than as a social change agent. During public comment at a Solid Waste Authority meeting, I spoke to share the school district’s experience, and to push back a bit at the idea that there is something wrong with a utility functioning to change behavior.

Fishermen made crab pot cleanup possible

It was very pleasing to read “fishermen getting credit for cleaning up coastal waters” in the sub-headline of Adam Spencer’s excellent and detailed story, “Pulling Pots,” in the Sept. 27 Triplicate.
