 Sport crab season ends next Thursday

Editor's note: This week we decided to give Triplicate correspondent Adam Spencer another crack at his brainchild — Reel Deal. Spencer created the column from scratch as a Triplicate staff writer in 2012 and has since passed on the torch to sports editor Michael Zogg. 

With ocean temperatures hovering at a level a little higher this summer than salmon prefer, the celebrated pink meat has been hard to come by this season.


Warrior Memories: Greg joins Tex in DN Hall of Fame

This year 1965 graduate Greg Gatlin joins his dad in the Del Norte Athletic Hall of Fame. Greg is the son of former Warrior coach Tex Gatlin, who coached football and basketball for many years. While at Del Norte, Greg was an outstanding football, basketball and baseball player.

 Four teams survived unscathed heading into the third week of the Recreation Department’s slowpitch men’s league games on Monday. Newton’s Clean Sweep / R&R led the pack at 4-0 and had a bye on Monday. Baby D’s Lazers met up with the Old Dogs in a battle of the unbeatens.

DN cross country starts up Aug. 17

The boys and girls cross country programs plan to kick off practice for the 2015 fall season on Aug. 17 at 3:30 p.m. at the track at Del Norte High School.


Crescent City Triathlon on Aug. 16

The date for the 31st Annual Crescent City Triathlon has been set for Sunday, Aug. 16, kicking off at the Fred Endert Community Pool.

 Bottom fish plentiful near harbor while salmon still elusive; halibut closes Wednesday

Fishing was good early in the week on the Wild Rivers coast but stiff winds began picking up Tuesday afternoon and kept many anglers off the ocean out of Crescent City. Sportfishermen out of Brookings Harbor were able to fi sh a few protected areas for rockfish, but were largely kept out of deeper waters. The big news of the week, however, comes from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which announced a blanket prohibition on fi shing in rivers from 2 p.m. until an hour before sundown.

Many local youth took their first steps into the world of soccer this week as the Del Norte Youth Soccer Association got underway with practices starting on Tuesday at Beachfront Park.
