King of Clubs: Golf is a game for thinkers

Golf is a game. It requires creativity, feel, patience and an open imagination.

I have always played golf like a game of chess, my ultimate goal being to shoot the lowest score I possibly could, and in order to do that I had to play the golf backwards in my head.

The 18-week season has just seven weeks left before the playoffs kick off. Pitufos has situated itself at the top of the standings, still undefeated after 11 weeks at 7-0-3.

Warrior Memories: Warrior greats headed to Hall

A group of former Warrior athletes and coaches has been selected for induction into the Del Norte High School Athletic Hall of Fame. They will be inducted during half time of the first football game of the season on Sept. 2.

This year’s group includes one coach and five athletes. Helen McNamara Ferguson is the coach being inducted, but she was also an excellent Warrior athlete before girls received the recognition they have now. In her senior year she was voted female athlete of the year.

Farm team wins DNLL baseballís 1st District 8 title

Del Norte will have its first male representatives at the Oregon Little League State Tournament this year.

Del Norte moved to Oregon’s District 8 several years ago, and the Warriors had a softball team win the district to advance to state, but this year’s Del Norte Farm League All Star team won the first district title for the boys — and they did it in dominating fashion.

Reel Deal: Salmon biting out of Brookings

The June salmon season is reportedly producing a few fish out of Crescent City, but anglers in Brookings have been having even more luck hauling in the pink meat this week.

Crescent City sportfishermen hoping to nab some salmon during the June opening may be out of luck due to heavy winds that will likely keep boats off the ocean throughout next week. The salmon season on the Northern California coast will close on Thursday, with the halibut season opening back up for a couple weeks on July 1.

The Del Norte softball team was awarded three Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 white stars, and three honorable mention selections after wrapping up league play in second place with a 9-3 record.

Although shortstop Payten Healy, firstbaseman Regin Loftin, and catcher Tvshiina Jacobs all received white stars for their efforts this season, head coach Pablo Lorenzi said he felt that everybody on the team this year played a pivotal role in the team’s success.

Give It A Tri: Triathlon is a head game, find your motivation to reach the finish

“The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses — behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.”  – Muhammad Ali

This is your challenge:  Make that move and take on the Aug. 21 triathlon or duathlon.  The force is with you — force yourself.

The 32nd Annual Crescent City Triathlon/Duathlon is for individual adults and for relay teams, with a kids triathlon for ages 5-12. But first, why even do it?  What is your motivation?

Warrior Memories: Melloís gridiron lesson

When I visit the local museum I always enjoy looking at the old red and white blanket that used to hang in the old Warrior gym, which is the rec. gym now. One of the names on that blanket taught me a real football lesson.

Toby Mello’s name appears there for the 1946 football season. In 1945, football was brought back to Del Norte after being dropped for a period of time during WWII. Toby was a standout fullback and defensive lineman on that team. He was a big lad of about 6’2” and weighing about 230. That was big in those days.
