Stick games: Ancient pastime

 Long before basketball, football or baseball, the most popular sport in Del Norte County (before the term Del Norte was ever coined) was the stick games.

 The Gasquet Complex wildfires burning in eastern Del Norte County grew 4,000 acres since Friday although much of the growth can be attributed to firefighters backburning between fire lines and the main fire of the Coon and Bear fires.

New alert system ready

Reverse 911 calling to home phones for emergencies has been a common tool for law enforcement and emergency officials for years, but with today’s many mediums of communication, landlines are sometimes the worst option for alerting the public.

County looks at emergency status

County supervisors will look today at proclaiming a local emergency due to the Gasquet Complex wildfires as well as issue the board’s official response to the Grand Jury’s Final Report released earlier this summer.

Thursday, August 20

At 2:35 a.m. a caller reported that two people were trying to break into a house on the 600 block of 4th Street.

At 9:12 a.m. a caller reported that someone she has a restraining order against has been texting her through a dating website.

Brookings residents injured in crash

Two Brookings residents suffered major injuries in a rollover crash Sunday on U.S. 101, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.

 Firefighters, homeowners among the first to buy commemorative shirts

As wildfire season heats up in Northern California and elsewhere, so does an industry that’s sprung up around the fighting of the fires — selling T-shirts and other merchandise to the men and women fighting the blazes.

“Do you have any hats left?” Firefighter Dan Cano asked Brandon Rands Wednesday at Rands’ T-shirt printing trailer outside the Gasquet Market.

Growing wildfires close roads

New closures were enacted this week for roads leading to the Gasquet wildfires, while the blazes continued to grow Friday, exceeding 12,000 acres.

Feliz to be tried as adult

Motion to dismiss denied; defendent pleads not guilty  

A request to dismiss murder charges against a 16-year-old accused of killing a Klamath teen and refile the case in juvenile court was denied Thursday. 

The accused killer, Nathan Feliz, then pleaded not guilty.

 A mountain lion prowling the Bertsch Tract is gnawing at some of its human residents who want the big cat gone. But state officials say there isn’t enough evidence to warrant killing the beast.
