Makela falls to top singles seed in NCS tournament

When Del Norte No. 1 girls tennis player Raili Makela won the Humboldt-Del Norte Singles Championships to earn a spot in the North Coast Section Division II singles championships, she knew she would be up against some of the best competition around, but Makela was unlucky enough to draw the No. 1 overall seed in the first round Tuesday.

Makela faced No. 1 Lauran McCormack of Head-Royce and fell 6-0, 6-0 to the eventual NCS Division II singles runner-up. Although the score wasn’t close, Makela made the most of the experience.

Warrior Memories: A season for giving thanks

Every year at this time I like to pause, look back and give thanks for all the blessings that have been given to me in my lifetime.

I like to look back and give thanks to the people that helped me get into the coaching profession. While I had great teachers and coaches there are five that got me pointed in the right direction — four coaches and one teacher from Del Norte High School.

The fall sports season has officially come to a close in Del Norte County, but as always, winter sports are right on its heels. The boys and girls basketball teams, as well as the wrestling squad, have all started practice and will kick off competition in the first week of December. Tryouts are already completed for the boys basketball team, which added six football players to workouts for the first time this week. The girls will start their season first hosting St. Bernard’s in Thunen Gym on Dec. 1. The girls and boys will then travel to Yreka for a tournament running Dec. 3-5. The Warrior wrestling team will start its season with the Battle at the Border, Del Norte’s only regular season home tournament of the year.

Reel Deal: Fishing picks up during week of rain

The Smith River rose above the necessary 600 cubic feet per second at Jedediah Smith on Sunday and has remained there all week, as consistent rain throughout the week pushed flows as high as 5,650 cfs Thursday night. As the Smith River rises, so too does the Chetco. Local fishermen have reportedly had luck hauling in salmon from both Wild Rivers.

Andy Martin, of Wild Rivers Fishing, also said that the increased flows have brought some of the first winter steelhead to the Smith and Chetco rivers this week. Although the steelhead season doesn’t generally peak until January or February, there are already fishable numbers in the systems.

Girls soccer: Making the grade

The Del Norte girls soccer team improved by leaps and bounds throughout its season. Head coach Clar Byers said he was pleased with how much the Warriors learned on the soccer field this fall, but the Del Norte girls also learned plenty about the world outside of sports as 10 Warriors earned California Interscholastic Federation Scholarship Awards.

In addition to lots of individual scholarship awards, the Warriors were one of six Del Norte fall sports to qualify to apply for a CIF team scholarship award this December with a 3.31 team GPA that puts it among the highest of 2015 Del Norte’s athletic teams so far.

Three HDN teams alive in NCS football playoffs

As the North Coast Section football playoffs advance into the quarterfinal round this week, the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 and Little 4 leagues still have teams vying for a section championship.

In the Division IV bracket, No. 3 seed Fortuna advanced to the quarterfinals with a 41-0 victory over No. 12 Harker. They will host No. 6 Piedmont on Saturday at 7 p.m. after the Highlanders topped Del Norte 31-6 in the first round. With a win, the Huskies would likely face the Warriors’ first opponent of the season, No. 2 Cardinal Newman who beat Healdsburg 56-7 and will host No. 7 Justin-Siena on Friday.

Warriors fall in NCS playoffs to Piedmont

The 2015 Del Norte football season came to a close on Saturday in Piedmont as the No. 11 Warriors fell 31-6 to No. 6 seed Piedmont in the first round of the North Coast Section Division IV playoffs.

Del Norte was only outgained by 89 yards in the contest, but several turnovers kept the Warriors from finding the end zone, and the Highlanders were able to take control of the game midway through the third quarter.

Del Norte Youth Football wins A, AAA titles

The Del Norte Youth Football program wrapped up the 2015 Six Rivers Youth Football League playoffs in style as both of the remaining Warrior teams won on Sunday in Humbolt State’s Redwood Bowl to earn A and AAA league championships for Del Norte.

Although the Del Norte junior varsity football team lost its first game and its last two games this season, the Warriors were able to run off seven straight victories in between, going 7-3 overall in 2015.

“It was a lot better than we first imagined but once we got rolling we were really rolling,” said first year Del Norte JV head coach Kenny Price. “I am extremely happy with the season. 7-3, to me, is a pretty good year. I am proud of going 7-3.”

The Del Norte football team rounded out the 2015 regular season with a pair of losses to Eureka and Fortuna, but the Warriors are ready to turn the page in an attempt to make a run in the postseason.

The Warriors (4-6, 3-3 Humboldt-Del Norte) were picked as the No. 11 seed in the North Coast Section Division IV playoff bracket on Sunday, earning a trip to Oakland to take on No. 6 Piedmont (8-2, 5-0 West Alameda County Conference) on Saturday with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
