Sign of irresponsible gun ownership

An oxymoron — responsible gun ownership. The recently-published photo (May 26) of the sign, “CAUTION CHILDREN AT PLAY” riddled by bullets reminded me of innumerable highway and information signs, and campground trash containers throughout the west that attest to the compulsive (and/or drunk or high) behavior of gun owners whose idea of having a gun seems to be — I must use it and shoot at something/anything.

Vet housing vouchers here due to McClure

I am writing in response to the homeless vet letter of May 21. The writer had borrowed a trailer to live on his property while he built his house. He was able to borrow a trailer because family knew someone with a trailer. It sounded like he disliked the trailer and didn’t understand why Martha McClure referred him to other services, rather than helping him personally since he was temporarily homeless.

Coastal Voices: Change not always good: Political contacts take time to cultivate

I have been involved in politics in Del Norte County for over 50 years. I always get amused by people running for public offices contending that “Change is Good.” I do not necessarily agree.

Scientists lack common sense on climate change

Why do fossil fuels get all the blame for climate change? We have all this warming of the Pacific waters causing algae blooms, mass destruction of sea life such as starfish degradation and increasing domoic acid exposure to our crabs and shellfish.

Attacks against McClure just political theater

Have you ever worked for a really poor manager? On the Coastal Commission, Martha McClure’s vote to replace the chief executive officer wasn’t motivated by some underhanded deal. He was simply not a good manager. The truth is that he is still employed by the Coastal Commission,  writing grant proposals and reviewing legislation.

Haven’t you ever gotten angry at someone and maybe cussed at them when they falsely accused you of something? It is not a crime to stand up for oneself, especially when someone is throwing out fabricated lies and innuendos directly to your face.

Coastal Voices: Bar-O Boys Ranch in need of volunteers

Surrounded by steep, forested hills and a raging river, the rugged Smith River canyon may seem like an unlikely location for a confinement facility.  Bar-O Boys Ranch, a program of the Del Norte County Probation Department, helps minors focus on personal growth and social development.

Although the wards at Bar-O Boys come from a mostly urban landscape, their life experiences are actually somewhat narrow when it comes to understanding possibilities.

Chance to correct county and country during elections

Well, well, it seems Martha McClure has gotten caught with her true personality exposed. About time.

Our local politics are beginning to look as if it might be as interesting as our national politics. Certainly, our choices just as clear. Perhaps we are being offered an opportunity to correct our county as well as to correct our country.

Coastal Voices: A brief history of a small coastal county and its hospital

I remember when I moved here as a medical wife in 1989, learning about ER call coverage. Physicians with hospital privileges were required to take calls at the hospital. It wasn’t a choice, it was a necessity. ER physicians lived here then, and physicians provided backup. Those on-call days were hard with full office schedules but most physicians joined with others for call coverage so they could sleep the rest of the time. Sutter had come in to manage, eventually building Sutter Coast Hospital. The Hospital District became the Health Care District when Seaside Hospital closed.

Health professionals go above and beyond locally

Last week, we celebrated both National Nurses Week and Hospital Week – a dedicated time to recognize our devoted health care staff who provide care in so many ways. Having just joined Sutter Coast within the last month, it has been a pleasure getting to know everyone. I have been so impressed with the lengths our staff go to in order to provide quality care and that many of our team members have dedicated their careers to helping this community and have been at Sutter Coast for 10, 20 and even 35 years. I, along with our management team, would like to thank all of the health care professionals in our community that work to improve the overall health of Del Norte and Curry county families.

Carlos Priestley, Sutter Coast Hospital Administrator

Thanks to all who supported Wonder Bus 5K fundraiser

On Saturday, May 7, over 40 people of all ages ran or walked the Mother of All 5Ks to show their support for the Wonder Bus. It was a wonderful community event, with strollers, dogs, and even one scooter taking part. Participants were greeted at the finish line by Del Norte High School’s steel drum band, and Ron Gastineau provided live commentary.
