Shifting winds scatter flames of controlled burn, cutting firefighter off from his crew

Controlled burns in the Bald Hills region of Redwood National Park went awry on Monday when winds shifted and caused spot fires, leading one firefighter to deploy a fire shelter after being cut off from the rest of his team.

“Fire can be unpredictable, and all it takes is a shift in weather conditions to cause the fire to do something that you don’t expect it to do,” said Jeff Denny, supervisory park ranger for Redwood National and State Parks.
