The Del Norte girls tennis team continued its winning ways on Tuesday with an 8-1 victory over Eureka for its seventh straight team win.

Although the Warriors won the meet handily, Del Norte head coach Samuel Escobar didn’t see the same level of play from his girls as in the previous match when they took down then-undefeated McKinleyville.

Early surge pushed Arcata past DN girls soccer

The first 40 minutes of the girls soccer game between Arcata and Del Norte was rough on the Warriors.

The Tigers grabbed the lead seven minutes into the game and led 4-0 just 10 minutes later. Arcata added a pair of goals late in the first half to take a 6-0 advantage into the break. The Warriors added an extra defender to its lineup, switching from a 4-4-2 lineup to a 5-3-1 for the second half, and Del Norte held the Tigers in check through the final 40 minutes to keep the final score 6-0.

Warrior boys soccer falls 3-0 to Arcata

The Arcata boys soccer team dictated the tempo and the run of play for most of its game in Del Norte on Wednesday and came away with a 3-0 victory over the Warriors.

“We played one of the top teams in the league today,” said Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu. “What let us down today is our passes were not accurate, our ball control wasn’t very good and we are just working too hard. We are just running about the field. That is something that I harp on a lot.”

Warrior football tangles with Tigers in McKinleyville

The Del Norte football team is trading in the Friday night lights for a Saturday afternoon tilt with Arcata this week at a neutral site game played at McKinleyville High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Although the Saturday Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 matchup strays from the regular schedule, Nova is excited for the opportunity.

“You change a few things when you play on Saturday,” he said. “What I like about it is there are times in the playoffs where we might have to play on Saturday, so it gives us an opportunity to get ready for that. We have already played in Eugene on a Saturday, so we are used to it.”

DN volleyball grabs road win in Fortuna

The Del Norte volleyball team picked up a win in its first Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 road game of the season, sweeping Fortuna in three straight sets (25-18, 25-21, 25-20) to improve to 2-0 in league play.

After struggling with their serves in the HDN opener against Eureka, the Warriors were back on target Tuesday, led by five aces apiece from Maddison Smedley and Tayler Melton.

Del Norte cross country runs at third HDN meet in Fortuna

The Del Norte boys and girls cross country teams traveled south to Fortuna for the third Humboldt-Del Norte meet of the season Thursday.

The Fortuna course provided a difficult challenge for the runners.

Young Warriors at Whalen

The Del Norte Youth Football program was back at home in Week 7 of the Six Rivers Youth Football League and the Warriors won four of the five games played throughout the day at Whalen Field.

The day ended with a hardfought 36-25 Del Norte Blue victory over previously undefeated Redwood.

Huskies boys soccer outclasses DN in 11-0 victory

The Del Norte boys soccer team had a tough matchup in Fortuna on Saturday against the perennial Humboldt-Del Norte boys soccer powerhouse Huskies. Fortuna showed once again why they have been one of the top teams in the league for years with an 11-0 victory over the Warriors.

“They were far better than us,” said Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu. “The boys competed as much as they could, but the gulf in class was too wide.”

Fortuna edges Warrior girls soccer 1-0

Although the Fortuna girls soccer team was obviously the aggressor against Del Norte on Saturday, the Warrior defense turned the Huskies back time and time again in its 1-0 loss in Fortuna.

“The girls played really well. It was an exciting game,” said Del Norte head coach Clar Byers. “Our girls stepped up and played a very defensive game. We had a few opportunities — a few shots on goal — but they had 30 shots against us.”
