Happy Feet

Bess Maxwell Elementary student Marco Martinez tries on his new pair of shoes after a shopping trip to Payless. Del Norte Triplicate / Bryant Anderson
Shawna Wilson was somewhat nervous when 24 kids streamed into Payless ShoeSource on Friday, but she said she was looking forward to it.

The youngsters, second- and third-graders from Bess Maxwell Elementary School, lined up in front of the store manager and her associate Tiffany Lopez to have their feet measured. Once they learned their size, the kids combed the aisles, looking for the perfect pair of sneakers as their substitute teacher, Cathy Woodward, looked on.

“You may use your walking feet and look for shoes,” Woodward said. “Do not grab them off the shelves and do not take them out of the box unless you put them back.”
