DN wrestlers take 5th place in Ukiah

The Del Norte wrestling team traveled south to Ukiah for one of its more difficult tournaments of the season. The Warriors were able to overcome some early adversity for a fifth place team finish to go along with six placers on Saturday.

“It was a difficult meet, but it always is,” said Del Norte assistant coach Nick Watson. “They have tough schools from Nevada and Sutter, which is one of the top schools in the Northern Section. We finished better than I thought we would, honestly.”

The Del Norte boys junior varsity basketball team had its home game against McKinleyville circled ever since a disappointing loss to the Panthers in mid-January. On Thursday the Warriors finally had another shot at McKinleyville, and Del Norte came out on top 53-47.

“The (first) McKinleyville game was our worst game of the year, but we came back and played great basketball the second time around,” said JV head coach Kevin Baxter. “This team has shown that they have a lot of grit. They are tough, and they are a lot more mentally strong than they were at the beginning of the season.”

Rain late last week blew out the Smith and Chetco rivers but over the weekend the plunkers were back at it and drift boats started joining the fray by Monday, kicking off the hottest week of steelhead fishing yet this year.

Meanwhile, ocean anglers had a brief respite from rough seas midway through the week and were able to nab nice crab, lingcod and rockfish before the surf picked back up.

Del Norte girls win defensive struggle against Mack 36-30

The Del Norte girls basketball team avenged its most lopsided loss of the year with a 36-30 road victory over the same McKinleyville team that beat the Warriors 46-27 in Crescent City less than a month ago.

The difference in the second game was Del Norte’s defense in the paint against the much bigger Panthers.

Shooting woes sink Warrior boys

The first time the Del Norte basketball team faced McKinleyville this season it poured in a season-high 75 points. When the Panthers came to Thunen Gym on Thursday, however, the Warriors just couldn’t find the bucket and McKinleyville was able to escape Crescent City with a 42-39 victory.

“We didn’t play well,” said Del Norte head coach Blaine Lopez. “We beat them up down there and thought they were going to come out and win and we can’t do that.”

Del Norte girls basketball falls 45-33 as Arcata wraps up HDN

The Del Norte girls basketball team got off to a slow start against Arcata and by the time the offense started clicking, the Tigers already had a commanding lead on their way to a 45-33 victory.

The Warriors managed just six points in each of the first two quarters as Arcata raced out to a 28-12 halftime lead. By the end of the third quarter the Tigers pushed their advantage to 18 points at 38-20.

The Del Norte boys junior varsity basketball team is starting to pick up steam as the season winds down, and it has everything to do with the team’s defense and effort.

“We are not very big, as everyone can see, but we play with a lot of heart,” said JV head coach Kevin Baxter. “That is all I can ask for. We have had our ups and downs this season, but as the season has gone along we are getting a lot better. They are maturing a lot. They are starting to figure out that hard work is hard, and if you are lazy then you don’t play for Del Norte.”

Warriors pull out close dual with Fortuna

Nothing separated the Del Norte and Fortuna wrestling teams when the dual ended in a 42-42 tie after 14 matches. In fact, both teams were still neck and neck after reading the first seven tiebreakers in the rule book.

The Warriors victory over Fortuna on Wednesday in Thunen Gym came down to tiebreaker H — the first wrestler to score points in each match. Based on that, Del Norte won eight to four.
