Runners of all ages take advantage of road closure in half-marathon and 5K races

The first-ever Run in the Redwoods drew 75 participants to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park to take advantage of Newton B. Drury Parkway’s closure on Saturday for 5K and half-marathon races.

“It is a fundraiser to do some trail improvement here, but it is also an opportunity just to get people out into the parks and realize that we have fantastic public land to support,” said Cathy Bonser, executive director of the Redwood Parks Association. “Every year the parkway is closed to vehicles on this day, and we encourage hikers and bikers to come out. We thought, ‘Why not have runners, too?’ This was a good way to publicize that.”
