Reel Deal: Weather quells start to salmon season

Salmon and bottomfishing season is finally here in Del Norte, but other than some prime rockfish bite on Sunday, poor conditions have largely spoiled the party for ocean anglers, especially those hoping to snag some salmon when the season opened on Monday.

The forecast doesn’t look great for today, but Sunday may be your best bet to get out and search for some early ocean salmon in California. The salmon season opens May 28 in Oregon.

Warrior softball falls in HDN semifinals

ARCATA — The Del Norte softball team struggled to score runs in the Humboldt-Del Norte Tournament semifinals against St. Bernard’s on Wednesday. The Crusaders took advantage of a big  fifth-inning rally to beat the Warriors 5-1, advancing to play Fortuna in the championship game on Saturday.

Head coach Pablo Lorenzi said he felt like the team was still having trouble focusing mentally after picking up an exciting 2-1 victory over previously undefeated Fortuna in the regular season finale.

Warrior Memories: From DN athlete to college coach

When I look back on my years as a Warrior coach, certain names always come to mind.

While most of my coaching career was as a football coach, one year I got to coach the Warrior track team. There were a lot of talented boys and girls on that team. One individual was a young man that I had the privilege of coaching in football as well, Terry Vance.

In the lower division championship, Mammas Boys II topped Redwood Medical 68-61 to claim what would be the only title of the night. In the upper division, the Tropics handed Mammas Boys their first loss of the tournament, 61-45, to force a winner-take-all rematch at a time and date yet to be determined. In all, about 75 kids participated on eight teams between the two divisions this year.

Del Norte softball wins battle of the Warriors

The Del Norte softball team got off to a slow start on Tuesday in the first round of the Humboldt-Del Norte Tournament against Little 4 No. 3 seed Hoopa, but the Warriors caught fire midway through the game and advanced to the semifinals with a 10-1 victory over the Warriors from Hoopa.

“We did not come to play at the start of the game,” said Del Norte head coach Pablo Lorenzi. “We were lethargic, I think there was still some left over mental stress from Monday. I think that showed our age a little bit, just not being able to come out and play tough consistently.”

DN halts Huskiesí win streak at 29
