Clumps of lupine paint Redwood National Park’s prairies purple on a Saturday afternoon. The wildflowers grow in open areas alongside Bald Hills Road near Lyons Ranch past Lady Bird Johnson and Tall Trees groves. Motorists can access Bald Hills Road from U.S. 101 north of Orick.


District eyes $50K–$70K consultant to improve health care

The Del Norte Healthcare District  board has scheduled a special meeting 5 p.m. Thursday to discuss hiring Quorum Health Resources for a consulting fee of between $50,000 and $70,000, according to district board members.

Civil rights and civil liberties expert john a. powell will lead a discussion on inclusion and belonging Friday.

Powell’s visit to Del Norte and Humboldt counties will kick off an 18-month series of public talks and workshops on helping individuals, organizations, agencies and employers identify and change patterns and systems that keep people from succeeding.

A misdemeanor crime turns out to have been the tipping point for Del Norte’s tolerance of Ronnie Meyer Sr., 48, of Crescent City.


Pair of high-speed car chases under investigation

Two high-speed car chases in less than a week both caught some attention but not one their targets.

The first appeared to make a big loop around Crescent City at speeds reaching 120 miles per hour. Del Norte Sheriff logs for April 28 at 10 p.m. note officers tried to pull over a small black sedan speeding near the junction of U.S. 101 and U.S. 199 for failure to yield.


Tall Ships to skip stop in Crescent City harbor

Due to inclement weather, the Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain will forego their visit Crescent City this year and proceed directly to Coos Bay.

This sign popped up on U.S. 199 on Friday, but it wasn’t put up by Caltrans.
A sign near mile marker 10.50 of U.S. 199 popped up early this weekend, apparently to remind motorists of recent car-in-river collisions at the site. Last week, three young people were injured after driving partway into the Smith River and two weeks before that a college student from Grants Pass was killed when her car submerged totally. In December, two Crescent City men died after plunging into the water on a rainy night.

Note: From 5:17 p.m.

At 6:36 p.m., California Highway Patrol requested assistance with a 4-year-old locked inside a vehicle at the Collier Tunnel rest stop in Gasquet. 

At 7:28 p.m., report of a large brush fire near the 400 block of Lynch Drive. Caller is afraid the wind will blow the fire into nearby bushes.

At 7:47 p.m., report of an unrestrained juvenile riding improperly in a vehicle near the 300 block of M Street.

DeRego

candidates in the upcoming Board of Supervisors election.

All nine contenders across three county districts in the approaching non-partisan June 7 contest squared off to answer questions ventured by audience members and community organizers. Moderator John Pritchett of Del Norte Ambulance steered discussion through the evening’s major topics, including economic development, roadway safety, youth enrichment, environmental protection, transiency, and board cooperation with other agencies.
