Liga La Costa (Week 13)

On Sunday Liga La Costa was back at La Joya Field behind the market in Smith River for its 13th week of competition in the 18-week regular season soccer league. Pitufos took the week off but remains in the driver seat for top seed in the playoffs with an undefeated record of 7-0-4. It has been a slugfest for second place, however, with four teams within two points of each other.

Giant Warriors on the diamond

The players on the Northern Humboldt Giants American Legion baseball team have morphed from bitter intraleague rivals into a terrific team in just a couple months.

The Giants are comprised of players from McKinleyville, Arcata and Eureka with four players from Del Norte High School thrown into the mix.

Reel Deal: Search for California salmon resumes today

Although the halibut fishing still isn’t red hot out of Crescent City Harbor it has been the best it has been all season during the July opening before the season came to a close once again on Friday. Anglers looking for some late halibut were thwarted late in the week as winds picked up to keep most sportfishermen on land. Despite the poor conditions, the salmon season opens back up today, and anglers are hopeful for a successful July salmon season once the ocean flattens out a bit. Meanwhile the bottomfishing has taken a bit of a step back over the last week.

Warrior Memories: Mattz is one of my favorite Warriors

The Warriors’ first home game is always a special night. This is always the night we get to welcome a new group into the Warrior Athletic Hall of Fame.

This year is extra special for me as one of my longtime favorites is entering — 1960 graduate Kenny Mattz.

For a little over a month the Lewis family has been traveling across the country from Smith River to Southern California and over to Michigan while finding various spots to pitch a tent and camp for a night or two. Along the way they have driven through epic Midwestern thunderstorms, hunkered down to wait out tornado warnings and discovered the joys of lightning bugs.

The main focus of the past month, however, has been wrestling.

Give it a Tri: Time for kids to tri

Let’s focus on the children’s triathlon this week. Kids ages 5 through 12 have races designed just for them. The courses are shorter and the rules more lenient. Plus, it is very family friendly. When adults encourage kids to train throughout the summer for an organized race, everyone wins.

The kids race starts in the pool at approximately 11 a.m. once the adults races are completed. This enables adults to race and finish before their kids head out. Each age group goes off by itself. A 50 yard swim is up and back once, the long way; 100 yards, obviously, is two such laps. Flotation devices are allowed and goggles are encouraged.

DNLL drops two at Oregon State Tournament

The Del Norte Little League Farm League All Stars weren’t able to scratch out a win at the Oregon State Little League Tournament in Gold Hill, falling 11-5 to Dalles in the first round Saturday and 11-8 to Klamath Falls on Sunday.

But the squad of 8-9 year olds from Del Norte has already made its mark on history as the first DNLL team to advance all the way to the Oregon State Tournament.
