Basketball season is here and in full swing. When these round balls are rolled out, the gym at the high school fills with excited fans.

The Warriors have always had excellent basketball coaches that kept the team close to the top. Coaches like Chuck DeAutremont, Tex Gatlin, Wally Maciel and Dale Thomas always produced very competitive teams.

Jaycees tourney continues 40-year tradition

For nearly half a century, the Jaycees eighth grade girls basketball tournament has drawn teams from around Northern California and Southern Oregon to compete in gyms around Del Norte County.

The tradition continues Friday as the 42nd annual tournament kicks off, with 40 middle school teams joining the action this year. Teams are classified in five divisions: AAA, AA, A, B and C.

“It’s one of the premiere middle school basketball tournaments for the states of Oregon and California,” noted Crescent Elk eighth-grade A coach John Horner.

Warriors return most of their production from last year’s team that took second in the HDN

The Del Norte boys basketball team returns four starters and most of its rotation from last year’s 10-9 team that finished 5-4 in the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 and tied for second place with Eureka.

With so many players returning, the Warriors already feel like they are a little ahead of the game, dispite head coach Blaine Lopez and several key pieces of the team missing the first two weeks of practice while helping the football team to the quarterfinals of the North Coast Section Division IV playoffs.

Warriors expect faster, better shooting team as it rebounds from several key roster changes

The Del Norte girls basketball team is still a work in progress as head coach Jeff Cook has struggled to get everyone to practice as tennis and volleyball players both reached the postseason this fall.

The Warriors are coming off of a 9-13 season last year, but the team struggled in league play, going 0-8 in the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5.

“We are still a young team,” Cook said. “We have four girls returning, three of which played a lot last year. So I don’t really know what I have yet. There are a lot of juniors on this team, but we don’t have a lot of experience playing at the varsity level.”

Anglers hopeful that higher water levels this weekend will usher in the start of steelhead season

This weekend’s rising rivers are expected to usher in the steelhead season on the Smith and Chetco rivers, which have already been experiencing a fantastic chinook salmon season.

Smith River

While there are still some bright chinook salmon entering the Smith River and a few more weeks of good salmon fishing left, things have definitely slowed down on the Smith.

Jim Mitchell of Gotcha Hooked Fish Trips said he has been catching salmon throughout the mainstem Smith from the Forks (Middle Fork and South Fork confluence) to the county boat ramp on Fred Haight Drive.
