110 men, women and children compete in 30th annual Crescent City Triathlon on Sunday 

It was overcast and a little foggy at times, but that was just perfect for the 110 athletes who participated in the 30th Annual Crescent City Triathlon on Sunday.

“Anytime we get above 100 (participants) that is a good turnout,” said race director Russ Burnette.

Many of the participants came to Beachfront Park from cities farther inland that have been entrenched in a heat wave this summer.

PDGA coming to Beachfront course

Wild Rivers Disc Golf Club sets up C-tier tournament in less than a month 

For the first time ever, the Professional Disc Golf Association has a stop in Crescent City with a brand new C-tier tournament called Bangin’ at the Beach set for Saturday, Aug. 23, at Beachfront Park Disc Golf Course.

The Wild Rivers Disc Golf  Club has hosted several tournaments at Beachfront Park since the disc golf course was installed in 2003, including an informal weekly doubles tournament on Sunday at 9 a.m., but Bangin’ on the Beach will be Beachfront’s debut for the PDGA.

Reel Deal: Salmon found in Brookings

Just as many had started to write off the 2014 ocean salmon season finished, anglers out of the Port of Brookings-Harbor started pulling in some of the delicious pink meat as well as several halibut.

Limits of rockcod and half-limits of lingcod are being easily caught out of both Crescent City and Brookings, and fishing in the Lower Rogue and Lower Klamath River has picked up a bit, too.

Warriors show off what they have learned in the first week of practice in intersquad scrimmage 

Friday night football was back as the Del Norte High School football teams took Mike Whalen Field for the Gatorade scrimmage. Warrior fans in attendance were treated to the first look at the school’s junior varsity and varsity football teams.

Both teams played several offensive drives with the offensive and defensive starters on the field at different times.

Aug. 30, when the Warriors play their first football game and Del Norte welcomes 2001 graduate Holly Gutierrez into the Del Norte Athletic Hall of Fame, is fast approaching. This talented young lady demonstrated the potential to be outstanding in four sports, volleyball, soccer, basketball and softball.

Coulson Farms extends slowpitch softball dominance with victory in Wooden Bat Classic 

After a week off, the Del Norte Recreation Department’s co-ed softball league got back on the diamonds at Pykes Field on Tuesday.

Brooke’s Angels, which didn’t play on Tuesday, remains the top team in the co-ed division with a 6-0 record with a week-and-a-half left in the regular season before the  playoffs begin.

Crescent City Triathlon ready for 30th year

With swimming, biking and running, a triathlon is one of the most complete tests of physical fitness and endurance an athlete can compete in.

The Crescent City Triathlon returns to Beachfront Park for its 30th year on Sunday, giving local athletes a chance to compete. Del Norters will have the opportunity to see not only how they stack up against each other across disciplines, but also against athletes from Medford, Eureka and Brookings, which nearly always has racers in attendance at the event.

Crescent City fishermen remain hopeful salmon bite picks up before season closes in September 

Ocean salmon fishing has certainly seemed to cool off the coast of Crescent City and Brookings, but with reports of at least a salmon or two per day in Crescent City and great reports out of Eureka, anglers have hope that the border coast may get another taste of red-hot salmon fishing before the season closes Sept. 7.

Steelhead fishing has been productive from Klamath Glen to Blue Creek, and there are reports of some adult salmon caught in the estuary.
