Facts speak volumes in Grand Jury Report

I am writing in my promised response to anyone misquoting the amount that went missing over a period of 10 years from the Solid Waste Management Authority. According to the Grand Jury Report, the amount ranges according to who is asked. The Triplicate reported more than a year ago that the actual figure for the unaccounted money was closer to $9,000.

Prevent cell phone bullying

You recently had an article (“School district sued over bullying case,” April 25) concerning bullying at Redwood School.

Pages of History: The case of the restless tombstone

From the page of the Del Norte Triplicate, June 1955:

Crescent City has a restless tombstone, or at least a vandal with a morbid sense of humor. Last week police reported that a headstone from a local cemetery had been found in a telephone booth outside the phone company’s office and that a local mortician had returned it to the graveyard.

Yes We Can: Education 'the old fashioned way'

This is a story that I have wanted to share for several years about my 33 years teaching and coaching in Del Norte County. I can’t believe that I have been retired as an educator for 21 years.

Grand Jury ignores theft and follows double standard

When I read the Grand Jury Report, I said to myself we will finally get to the bottom of all of the Solid Waste Authority controversy. What a disappointment!

Bias evident in report from the Grand Jury

I just read the 2014–15 Del Norte County Grand Jury Report, and I am more than a little perplexed. Commenting on the Solid Waste Authority missing funds, the Grand Jury could not find evidence of the exact quantity of money that was missing, yet they had full access to the Scanlon Report, which showed that the amount was exactly $25,732.15. What prevented the Grand Jury from accepting the Scanlon Report as accurate?

Coastal Voices: Del Norte’s people make this place great

As a newcomer to this community, I am continually impressed with its history of camaraderie and of the stalwart attitude its citizens have had in the face of disaster. Hence, I was delighted to be given an opportunity to share my musings on what makes Crescent City and Del Norte County people special because that is at the core of what makes this place exceptional.

Not everybody wants to
get out of this town, Oprah

I take offense at the idea that Ms. Oprah Winfrey may have made the statement, “Get me out of this dirty town.” I also take offense at Mr. Gitlin giving it credence by repeating it (“Coastal Voices: Volunteers ‘Take a Bite out of Blight,’” June 6). Not everyone can afford to live in Montecito nor any of the other locations where she owns property.
