3 years in highway crash that killed 3

A local man was sentenced  to three years in the Del Norte County Jail last week after a plea deal in his vehicular manslaughter case.

The case against 24-year-old Darren J. Davis stemmed from a wreck south of Crescent City in March 2012 that killed three people, including his older brother, Darvin Davis, who was 25.

Darren Davis, of Crescent City, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 101 when he crossed into oncoming traffic and was struck by a Honda Accord, authorities said.

The Volkswagen Beetle that Davis was driving was struck on its passenger side. The collision sent it rolling to the southbound shoulder, landing on the passenger side where Darvin Davis was sitting, authorities said. Darvin Davis died as a result of the crash, as did Darrell L. Stock, 77, and his wife, Pamela A. Stock, 66, both of Crescent City, who were in the Accord, authorities said.

Initially facing three counts of vehicular manslaughter and a reckless driving charge, Davis pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular manslaughter without negligence, reckless driving and inflicting corporal injury to a cohabitant — the latter charge was consolidated into the sentence from a separate case.

He received a total of two years and four months — to be served consecutively — for the vehicular manslaughter case and an additional eight months for the domestic violence case.

He must also pay $3,500 in restitution and fines and will be on probation for three years pending his release.

Salena Norris, who shared a child with Darvin Davis, read a letter at Darren Davis’ sentencing.

The letter states, “You told me you couldn’t look me in the eye and that the last thing your brother had said to you was to slow down.”

She spoke of the void Darvin Davis’ death has left on her life and her son’s life.

“For all of this I will never forgive you,” it ends.
