Steelhead Derby doubles participation

After several years of low attendence, 33rd Rowdy Creek Steelhead Derby draws 22 teams

The Rowdy Creek Fish Hatchery Steelhead Derby, once a widely reknown fishing competition throughout the region, was back at full throttle this year. The derby was again pushing the competitions’ maximum capacity with 22 teams — almost double last year’s total.

“It is like back in the old days,” said Craig McRae, a Vacaville resident who has been coming to the RCFH Steelhead Derby for over 20 years. “For the last four or five years the numbers have been down around a dozen teams, but back in the old days we had about 22 to 24. I think it is all credit to Kimberlee Swift. She is the new director of the derby and she has worked her tail off. Whatever went right is because of her. She just dove into it like a madman and it paid off. She is a go-getter.”

DN girls back in NCS hoops tourney

For the first time since 2002, the Del Norte girls basketball team is headed to the North Coast Section Tournament. On Sunday, the Warriors were named as the No. 16 seed in the 16-team tournament. Del Norte will travel to Orinda Tuesday to take on top-seeded Miramonte, which is ranked No. 4 in the entire state by Maxpreps.com.

Warrior wrestlers advance nine of 12 grapplers to NCS Tournament

The Del Norte High wrestling team returned from the Humboldt-Del Norte League Final tournament in McKinleyville on Saturday with a second-place overall team finish. More importantly, nine of the 12 wrestlers did well enough to punch their ticket to the North Coast Section Tournament next weekend.

Junior varsity players and coaches both take valuable lessons away from basketball season

It was a year of growth for the Del Norte girls basketball junior varsity team in 2015. Everyone from the players to the first-year JV coach learned valuable lessons on the court as the team finished 8-9 overall and 3-5 in the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5.

“It was my first year coaching girls high school,” said head coach John Horner, who has coached this freshmen class every year since they were in sixth grade. “It was the first time in a few years that I was coaching a brand-new group of girls that I hadn’t coached before (the sophomores). It was a fun time because they taught me just as much as I taught them.”

Warriors wrestle for Humboldt-Del Norte championship, spot in sections

This is what the Del Norte grapplers have been working for since November.

The Del Norte wrestling squad will travel south to McKinleyville today for the Humboldt-Del Norte League Finals pitting all of the eight varsity lineups in Humboldt and Del Norte counties against each other. Not only will a league championship be on the line, but also a trip to the North Coast Section tournament next weekend.

Warrior Memories: Maciel a class act as coach, person

Baseball season is here and with it come a lot of great memories. One group of memories centers around former Warrior teacher, coach and Hall of Fame member Wally Maciel.

Wally was born in Crescent City but because of World War II moved to Sunnyvale and was a graduate of Fremont High School. He graduated at the age of 17 and moved back to Crescent City.

Reel Deal: Rivers teeming with drift boats

Local rivers stocked with anglers, guides for Rowdy Creek Steelhead Derby

Although fishing has reportedly been fairly good all week on both the Smith and Chetco rivers, this weekend may be pretty crowded fishing for the average angler, because there will be 22 drift boats out on both rivers as part of the 33rd Annual Rodwy Creek Steelhead Derby.

Del Norte misses opportunities down the stretch; McKinleyville converts to complete comeback

Even after McKinleyville erased a 20-point deficit over the course of the final 15 minutes of the second half, the Del Norte boys basketball team still had a chance to pull off an upset in the first round of the Dick Nicali Tournament on Tuesday. But a missed free throw and subsequent tip-in attempt were just off the mark, and the Panthers controlled the overtime period for a 58-48 victory to advance to the second round of the Humboldt-Del Norte tournament.

“Obviously we are disappointed,” said Del Norte head coach Blaine Lopez. “I really believe that playing two games, one on Friday and one on Monday, really hurt us. We ran out of gas. Give them credit, they hit big shots and made their free throws down the stretch and we didn’t.”

Rowdy Creek hosts annual fishing derby

The Rowdy Creek Fish Hatchery Steelhead Derby is back this weekend as 25 teams of four will be scouring both the Chetco and Smith rivers on Friday and Saturday in search of steelhead.

This year, the derby will be capped at 25 teams of four fishermen and two guides. Each team will be divided into groups of two fishermen and one guide, with one boat heading out on the Chetco River and the other on the Smith on Friday. The boats will trade rivers on Saturday for the final day of the fishing competition.
