Artists work on revamped diorama to represent county in Sacramento 

Del Norte County’s display at the state Capitol highlighting certain notable features of the area, sits right across from Gov. Jerry Brown’s office, and it’s about to get a major upgrade. 

According to recent feedback, the display needed a facelift.

It’s not a crime to be homeless. But it is a crime to damage private property or park land, or worse, start a wildfire to name a few issues the National Park Service and Del Norte County Code Enforcement have had to face with the lack of homeless shelter in Del Norte County. 


Officials: School fire was arson

Reward offered for any information leading to arrest 

Local education officials are calling a fire that damaged part of a portable building at Smith River School on Wednesday arson and are working the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office to find the responsible parties.

A reward of up to $1,000 is offered to anyone whose information leads to an arrest and a conviction, although Jeff Napier, Del Norte County Unified School District assistant superintendent of business, said he hopes those responsible will come forward.


Lor gets 25 to life sentence for rape

Wilson Lor, 18, of Crescent City was sentenced Wednesday by Judge William Follet to serve 25 years to life in San Quentin State Prison after a jury found him guilty of rape in concert and found the special allegation of kidnapping for rape to be true.

He was convicted June 23 in Del Norte Superior Court.


Tribe: No salmon at Salmon Festival

For the first time in 54 years, there will be no salmon at the annual Yurok Salmon Festival, according to press release from the tribe received Friday. They cite a record low fish run as the reason.

“This was a very difficult decision. We hope that all festival attendees understand that this was the only responsible option,” said Thomas P. O’Rourke Sr., chairman of the Yurok Tribe. 


Waste director: Over 130 vehicles abandoned per year

An abandoned car or truck (even worse, an RV) is not only an unwelcome sight, it is a violation of local law.

“The estimated amount of abandoned vehicles located throughout Del Norte County is in excess of 130 vehicles per year,” said Tedd Ward, director of the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority. “The estimated number is only the vehicles we know about. Unfortunately there are a number of abandoned vehicles that are hidden and are not reported.”


Election filing period opens

Locals already filing for Nov. 8 general election 

The filing period has opened for the Nov. 8 general election and several local candidates have already declared their intention to run for public office.

In addition to the run-off election for Del Norte County Districts 1 and 5, seats on the Crescent City Council, the Crescent City Harbor District and the Del Norte County Unified School District Board of Trustees are up for grabs.

Sutter Coast Hospital and the reasons behind hundreds of patient transfers each year tops the agenda Tuesday at the Del Norte Healthcare District meeting.

Last month, the district’s Chairman Dr. Kevin Caldwell wrote a letter to Sutter Coast CEO Mitch Hanna on behalf of the board asking him for clarification on the number of available beds and how the hospital was managing the staffing for that number of beds.


CC woman killed in crash in Bandon

BANDON, Oregon — Karen Barlow, 61, of Crescent City was killed July 15 when the motorcycle she was a passenger on was rear-ended by a pickup truck towing a trailer, according to an article in the Bandon Western World.


Bodies found near plane wreck offshore of Brookings

Dive rescue members Friday morning recovered a second body about 30 feet from the wreckage of the Cessna 172 that crashed into the ocean July 4 about a half-mile from Rainbow Rock northwest of Brookings.

Officials believe they know the identity of the male, but aren’t releasing the information until they can confirm it with the mortuary. Family members of those lost in the wreck have been notified, said Curry County Sheriff John Ward.
