DN JV football continues on its quest for a perfect season with win in Eureka

The Del Norte junior varsity football team has gotten off to an incredible 8-0 start this season.

While any team still undefeated this late in the year is undoubtedly talented, sometimes it also takes a little bit of luck. That was the case on Friday when the Warriors broke a 6-6 tie in the last minute of the game to escape Eureka with a 12-6 victory.

DN tennis plays well at HDN singles

The Del Norte tennis team had a strong showing at a truncated Humboldt-Del Norte singles tennis championship on Saturday in Eureka.

The meet was originally scheduled to take place in Fortuna, but due to inclement weather it was forced to move to indoor courts in Eureka. With just three indoor courts, the league decided to play only the No. 1, 2 and 3 brackets.

Warrior football blows by Eureka 30-7

Del Norte uses explosive offense in first half, lockdown defense in second

The Del Norte football team picked up its first win against Eureka in six games, and its first win in Eureka since 2007 with an impressive 30-7 victory over the Loggers on Friday.

“I thought physically we were pretty dominant,” said head coach Ray Rook. “We played well on every side of the ball.”

DN loses Costello, match in Arcata

The Del Norte volleyball team lost its first Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 League match in Arcata on Thursday.

The Warriors lost 3-2 (17-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22, 15-5) but were able to push the Tigers to five sets despite losing one of their top players, senior Kayla Costello, to a sprained ankle early in the second match.

Warrior Memories: Rodney could really run the ball

When I attend a Del Norte football game it is always great to see Rodney Shellabarger on the sidelines working as an assistant coach for the Warriors. Rodney was an outstanding running back for the Warriors in the late 1980s.

In 1987, Rodney’s junior year, he put on a performance that as a coach I will always remember.

Boys soccer shows grit in 2-1 victory

The Del Norte boys soccer team got all that they could handle from South Fork on Wednesday, but the Warriors were able to come through with a second-half goal for a 2-1 win.

“We didn’t really connect,” said head coach David Sanyaolu. “Our passes were not accurate and we struggled for most of the game. It was our grit and determination that allowed us to get the result.”

Warrior football ready for Eureka

The Del Norte football team is rested and ready to get back out onto the gridiron for a Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 conference showdown in Eureka Friday. The Warriors are coming off a much-needed bye week in which they have seen their numbers swell from 21 active players to 24.

“We have gotten a little more healthy; we have gotten a couple players back and the kids have been playing well,” Rook said. “I have been using the word ‘inspired’ for about a week now. They seem to be ready to accept the challenge and each practice seems to get a little better. We have been off long enough now and I think we are ready to go play.”
