Warriors fall 62-19 in 2015 season opener against NCS No. 9 Cardinal Newman at Whalen Field

From the opening kickoff the Del Norte football team could tell it was in for a diffi cult first test to open the 2015 season. Cardinal Newman caught the opening kickoff about five yards deep in its own endzone and returned it 105 yards in 13 seconds to put the Cardinals up 7-0 and they never trailed again, pulling away for a 61-19 victory.

The division IV Warriors welcomed division III Cardinal Newman, ranked No. 9 overall in the North Coast Section this year, to Whalen Field for its season opener and the Cardinals showed why they got that lofty preseason ranking.

“Like I told the kids, the preseason is the preseason,” said Del Norte head coach Lewis Nova, coaching the Warriors for the first time since 2008. “We came out and hit the big league right away. They are ranked highly and that is a credit to their program, but our program will grow. We will continue to get better and now we will get ready for Ft. Bragg.”

With increased flows on the Lower Klamath River from the Trinity Reservoir, fishing on the river has picked up this week with reports of lots of steelhead and increasing numbers of king salmon as the annual fall run gets underway. Meanwhile fishing on the ocean out of Crescent City and Brookings has been fairly successful with limits of bottomfish and several lingcod being caught. There have also been some salmon showing up as the ocean season nears its end.

Warrior Memories: Hall of Fame is in great hands

During the years I was able to coach at Del Norte High School I had the pleasure and privilege of working with a lot of outstanding athletes. There was one young man who was never able to put on a helmet and take to the gridiron or shoot baskets on the basketball court but that young man has always been a real inspiration to me.

That special person is Aaron Finley.

He had a knowledge and insight into sports that was beyond his age. He never missed a Warrior athletic event. Physical issues may have kept him off the field but his mind was in the games.

NCRD hopes for competitive match, to renew “sibling rivalry” with Humboldt Saturday

The North Coast Roller Derby will be back at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds on Saturday for one last bout this season.

The Tsunami Sirens will host the Humboldt Roller Derby in the first meeting between the two nearby derbies since the start of the 2014 season.

“It looks like we are trying to get back into our sibling rivalry with them,” said Adrianna “Full Metal Jackie” Stefko. “There is no reason that we shouldn’t be playing them all the time. I am expecting a good, hard-hitting bout. I am expecting it to be pretty evenly matched too.”

The Sirens got the better of Humboldt early last season with a hard-fought 169-160 victory — the Sirens first ever win over the club that sent skaters to Del Norte for the North Coast Roller Derby’s initial boot camp as the Sirens were first forming in 2011.

King of Clubs: Golf brings people together

Local charity golf tournaments are great fund raising events. Many non-profit organizations benefit tremendously from one day or multiple day fun competitions held on golf courses. Normally, charity golf events are formatted in a fun, easy way to attract as many people as possible to help the “cause.”

From local youth groups to older Emblems or Elks, many community members organize and come together in goodwill for the betterment of future generations. It is an important part of their efforts.

Recently, most notably in Del Norte County, there has been an increase in these events. CASA of Del Norte reported to me earlier this year, that their golf tournament held at Del Norte Golf Course is one of, if not, their biggest fundraiser of the year. The funds raised from that event went a long way in helping their positive advocacy program.
