Roberts couple formerly owned Newport Bandamp;B

Monty and Brenda Roberts opened the Beachcomber Restaurant on Feb. 11 after purchasing it the first of the year.

andquot;We're open nightly from 5 to 9,andquot; Brenda said. andquot;Our goal is to open up for lunch later in the season and to have outdoor dining also.andquot;

The Roberts decided to buy the Beachcomber after selling their Newport, Ore., bed and breakfast, the Tyee Lodge, in 2006.

andquot;We had no intention of selling the Bandamp;B, but a corporation came in and offered us a price we couldn't refuse,andquot; Brenda said. andquot;Just after we sold it, the Tyee Lodge was voted 2007 Inn of the Year by readers of Pamela Lanier's Guide to Bed and Breakfast Inns and Guesthouses International, a benchmark for the industry.andquot;

The Roberts spent six months traveling all over the world and then saw the Beachcomber advertised in the Oregonian.

andquot;My husband is an excellent cook and he's famous for his marinated New York steak,andquot; Brenda said. andquot;So we added that to the menu, along with some wonderful French desserts. Otherwise, the menu is the same.andquot;

The Roberts also hired chef David Erler, who studied culinary arts in Los Angeles.

Del Norte Appraisal in new hands: After performing real estate appraisals at Del Norte Appraisal Associates for two years under the supervision of Rick Love, Michael Johnson has more than met the time requirements to apply for his appraiser license and has purchased the business from his former boss.

andquot;I started the business 18 years ago,andquot; Love said. andquot;Now I'm going through the process of getting things drawn to a conclusion so I can retire.andquot;

Johnson expects to receive his appraisal license within the next couple of weeks, allowing him to appraise residential, multi-family, and land properties on his own.

Formerly a forest practice inspector for the California Department of Forestry, he is a licensed forester and therefore also able to perform timber appraisals.

andquot;I wanted to have my own business,andquot; Johnson said. andquot;I didn't want to work for wages any longer.andquot;

Eureka TV Group opens satellite office: Rudy Garcia, account executive with Eureka Television Group, opened an office at Rural Human Services in December to service the television marketing needs of local businesses better.

andquot;Businesses used to have to go to Eureka to advertise on our stations,andquot; Garcia said. andquot;This makes it easier for them.andquot;

Eureka Television is affiliated with CBS (Ch. 6), Fox (Ch. 29), Univision (Ch. 31), MyNetworkTV (Ch. 33), and CW.

andquot;We recently picked up two stations in Medford,andquot; Garcia said.

Programming comes out of New York City, he said, but the group hopes to add local news for Del Norte and Curry Counties by the end of 2008.

andquot;We would have to buy our own airtime to cover the local news,andquot; Garcia said. andquot;We want to cover football games and other things.andquot;
