The remaining Hunter Safety Self Study Program for 2007 will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the Lake Earl Wildlife Area Headquarters building at the end of Old Mill Road on the right.

This portion of the self study program will take about four hours, of which about two hours is lecture. Participants should pick up their self-study materials, register and pay the applicable fee of $10 before 5 p.m. Sept. 19 at the office of Mario de Solenni, 384 G Street in Crescent City. He can be reached at 464-6181.

Passing this course takes about 20-30 hours of serious study time, and good reading comprehension. Part of the testing is written (1 hour), part is demonstrating safe gun-handling (1 hour). Participants must pass both. If a participant cannot handle a gun safely, they will not get to take the written portion of the exam.

Locally, the self study program is not recommended for children under the age of 11, as they have difficulty passing the written portion of the test. Some of the educational materials are available on the Internet, but participants still must pass the written and safe gun-handling tests. An online study program is available at www.hunter-ed.com/ca/index.htm.

Prospective hunters who have previously failed the self study program may be retested at no charg
