These are some of the special events coming up on America's Wild Rivers Coast through Septemberfrom Port Orford, Ore., to Klamathstarting Friday.
Free Jazz Concert
The Palmer Lavin Duovocalist Sally Palmer and guitarist Mark Lavinperform a free concert at 8 p.m. Saturday at Gold Beach Books in Gold Beach, Ore.
Arts and Music Fest
The Port Orford Arts and Music Festival continues through Labor Day, Sept. 3, with a variety of events, including nightly square dancing, a day full of performances and demonstrations Saturday, and the annual Rotary Club Show and Shine from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
The fourth annual Slam'n Salmon Ocean Derby is set for Friday through Sunday with $15,000 in total prizes, operating from the Port of Brookings Harbor. Derby headquarters opens at noon today, where fishermen will be able to pick up their badges to begin fishing Friday morning.
The beer garden and vendors on the boardwalk also open up today. The derby concludes with a salmon barbecue on the Boardwalk on Sunday.
Labor Day Lunch
The Democratic Party of Del Norte County serves up a free Labor Day barbecue lunch from noon to 3 p.m. Monday at Beachfront Park in Crescent City. The guest speaker will be State Sen. Wesley Chesbro.
Dog Fashion Show
The Gold Beach Animal Shelter will be the beneficiary of a Haute Dog Fashion Show at 2 p.m. Monday at South Beach Gallery and Gardens in Gold Beach, Ore.
The fourth annual Oregon Coast Cycling Festival rolls into Gold Beach on Sept. 8, with a variety of events and routes to ride, all headquartered from the Event Center at the Beach in Gold Beach, Ore.
Coastal Fall Fest
Celebrate the season at the seventh annual Coastal Fall Fest all day Sept. 8-9, at the Port of Gold Beach, featuring vendors, entertainment, food booths and games.
Azalea Park Concert
The free summer concerts at the bandshell in Brookings' Azalea Park continue at 1 p.m. Sept. 9, with rock and roll of the Ferguson Brothers Band. The American Music Festival series concludes for the summer with the andquot;high octane American musicandquot; of Houston Jones at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16.
An Evening with Authors
An Evening with Authors, featuring eight Del Norte writers, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 13, at the Del Norte County Library in Crescent City.
The annual California Coastal Cleanup day will take place at 700 locations throughout the state from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 15. Get site information at www.coast4u.org.
California State Parks will sponsor the second annual Berry Fest in the Mill Creek Watershed of Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 15. The Berry Fest begins at the day-use parking area on Hamilton Road, three miles south of Crescent City on U.S. Hwy. 101.
The annual Curry Health Foundation's champagne dinner cruise on the Rogue River from Gold Beach to Agness, Ore., is slated for 1 p.m. on Sept. 16.
Foxwell Productions presents andquot;It Had to be Youandquot; in dinner theater format at several locations over the next few weeks:
?Saturday at the Port Orford Arts Festival.
?Sept. 7-8 at the Ellensburg Theater Co.'s Rogue Playhouse in Gold Beach, Ore.
?Sept. 28-29, at Ship Ashore Resort in Smith River.
Pianist Angela Jia Kim opens the 2007-08 Del Norte-Curry Community Concert Association season with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22, at Crescent Elk Auditorium in Crescent City.
The Coastal-Aires and Coastal Classics Barbershop Choruses present andquot;Harmony on the Air Waves,andquot; at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29, at the VFW Hall, Eighth and H streets, in Crescent City. The quartet Just in Time will give a special guest performance. Proceeds will go to the Del Norte County Schools music programs.
Open Air Markets
Several open-air markets operate during the summer months along the Wild Rivers Coast, including:
?The Brookings-Harbor Farmers Market, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays at the Port of Brookings Harbor.
?The Crescent City Farmers Market, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds.
?The Farmers and Outdoor Market on the grounds of Masquerade Village at the Port of Brookings Harbor, every Saturday, Sunday and holidays through October.
?The Wednesday Farmers Market is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hidden Treasures Mall parking lot behind the Central Building, 703 Chetco Ave., Brookings.
