To honor former first lady, Lady Bird Johnson, who died Wednesday at 94, five guided hikes are planned to Lady Bird Johnson Grove Saturday and Sunday.

Redwood Adventures offers the hikes as a way of recognizing Johnson's work to preserve and protect the area.

Hikes will begin at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, and at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The 8 p.m. hike Saturday is a candlelight hike, with candles supplied by the host organization.

Meet at Redwood Adventures Vacation Village cabins on Valley Green Camp Road, mile marker 124 on U.S. Hwy. 101. The area is about 3 miles north of Orick.

Hikers will caravan about 4 miles to the trailhead, which is off Bald Hills Road. Each hike takes between 60 and 90 minutes.

To reach the trailhead to Lady Bird Johnson Grove, travel 0.5 miles north of Orick on Highway 101 to Bald Hills Road, then travel east approximately 2.5 miles on Bald Hills Road.

The nature trail to Lady Bird Johnson Grove is built on a reclaimed logging road and is considered an easy walk along mostly flat ground among old-growth redwoods.

Lady Bird Johnson Grove was dedicated Aug. 28, 1969 by President Richard M. Nixon.

Also on hand were President Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson, Gov. Ronald Reagan, U.S. Secy. of the Interior Walter J. Hickel, U.S. Rep. Donald H. Clausen

(R-Calif.) and Rev. Billy Graham.

The proclamation creating Lady Bird Johnson Grove occurred less than a year after the formal dedication Oct. 2, 1968, of Redwood National Park.
