The 29th annual Jed Smith Mountain Men Tall Trees Rendezvous at Rowdy Creek opens Saturday and lasts July 7.
Featured this year will be a free chance to shoot a black powder gun for first-timers. The free shoot is planned for 1-5 p.m. July 4 on Vendor's Row at Rowdy Creek Gun Club. Follow U.S. Hwy. 101 north from Crescent City to Rowdy Creek Road and turn east. The gun club is 1.5 miles up the road from the highway, and accessible by turning left.
Campsites are available to registered black powder shooters only.
The public is invited to visit the encampment and peer into a sliver of history that lasted only from about 1800 until the 1840s.
Mountain men, women and their children will be garbed in period costume, using pre-1840s weapons and traditional long bows, and cooking with Dutch ovens over camp fires.
